@DouthatNYT I’m in PA, pro-choice. I appreciate the “humane” concerns for mother & child you raise in the 11/13 NYT, but services must be in place BEFORE you prevent abortions. Everything else is just a hypocritical male politician’s power trip to deprive women of equal status under the law.

This is not the same as being a good democratic leader, but it is a highly effective means to building a followership. The man has amazing charisma and is a great communicator. But beware of cults of personality!

Hi Jennifer: Obama pushed back against “cultification“. He was a constitutional law prof, understood those dangers. Kaepernick, like Obama, like Biden, push for “a more perfect Union”. None of them “disrespect the flag” or this greatest of countries: they want to make it better!

@ElyKreimendahl My Dudes: the missed point here is that an internship is not a job. It‘s experiential learning. A top drawer movie premiere is a networking candy-shop for a film production wannabe. Not accepting that offer? It’s not “oh-my-precious-time” — It‘s fear. We hold ourselves back.

It’s actually a fairly simple formula, whether helping fund a welding program, a supply chain major or a neuroscience research project. Loans are an investment in ourselves. Do you have a mortgage?

Scholarships are also selective. Finally the relevant major issue. The path to excellence is not about your definition of “relevance” but a combo of a person’s skills/aptitude, interests and values. That’s what builds success, & loans are part of the package that makes it happen.

To respond to your options: the “gun” is our meritocracy. To climb the meritocracy ladder from below often means no help from parents. Working enough to avoid loans … dude - that’s a lot of hours. The military is an option for many, but called “selective services” for a reason.
