@1000HolyPlaces@MattPolProf I agree with you. Just as eating food is as a general rule good, like you said, the quality of the reading material is very important. And, like food, you should try to savour it and enjoy the quality. Where trying to read some arbitrary number of books, kind of misses the point
@1000HolyPlaces@MattPolProf I’m not saying you can’t read for pleasure and I’m certainly not at all saying that reading is only valuable if it has some immediate use. What I originally took issue with was the idea that reading more books is inherently good
@1000HolyPlaces@MattPolProf But to what end exactly? Even if you could absorb and retain every word, like some savants can, shouldn’t the main goal be to use this knowledge? Either through deep understanding or action?
@SJosephBurns “You don’t go broke by diversifying into 50 mediocre assets. You go broke by going all in on 2 or 3 stocks that will run you out of your home.”
@Wurzzag@lostbutlucky “Dr. Bob Goldman surveyed elite athletes, asking them if they would take a "magic drug" that guaranteed them an Olympic gold medal every time, but would kill them within five years. Remarkably, more than half of the athletes surveyed said they would take the deal.”
@lxSGSGxl@based_edger3000@ZherkaOfficial There’s a reason why Odysseus has his crew plug their ears with wax and tie him to the mast. He’s not in denial of the attraction of the sirens, he recognizes it, but also knows of its danger, so he restrains himself. Pretending the siren isn’t attractive is to deceive yourself
