US lawmakers are pushing for stricter conditions on financial aid to Nigeria, proposing to withhold up to 50% of certain US assistance until Abuja meets specific benchmarks. The proposal, included in a US House Appropriations Committee funding bill, would place part of Nigeria’s foreign assistance on hold until Washington certifies that the government is taking effective steps to curb violence, support affected communities, hold perpetrators accountable, and facilitate the safe return of displaced people. The proposal does not specify an aid amount for Nigeria but applies to funds allocated under broader foreign assistance programmes. Lawmakers argue the move is meant to promote accountability and measurable progress. Nigerian authorities, however, maintain that the country’s security challenges are complex and driven by terrorism and communal conflict, not religious persecution.

With news like this, it becomes clearer even to detractors why MAZI NNAMDI KANU never deserved to spend one day in detention, not to talk of conviction & life imprisonment. Same goes for the legions of Igbo youths in detention/killed for merely uttering the word ‘referendum’.
