@allie__voss Not only that but those two things are connected: people are incentivized towards immediate consumption now because their avenues towards long-term goals like home ownership, starting a family etc are much more uncertain
@cremieuxrecueil Classic rationalist misunderstanding of reality. Yes you can probably determine that particular wars have bad outcomes empirically but if there was no instinct for war there would be no civilization in the first place
@RokoMijic NZ has been over for a while, its more of a theme park than a country at this point. Completely lost any sense of cultural identity other than being a place for tourists to look at mountains and larp as hobbits
@jusderaisingroy The explosion of invention in 19th century seems to largely come out of the discovery of electricity, radio waves etc unlocking possibilities that would just have been considered magic previously. Not sure if this was a unique event or something similar can happen again
@RokoMijic You're correct but that was a strength when western countries were homogenous and led to their success. Switching to red button mentality might solve some problems but it would also fundamentally be a different civilization
@Tiktok_glazer @CryptoCyberia it's kind of hard to pin down exact origins as there was a ton of crossover between /misc/ and /fit/, but yeah I think most of it was coming from /misc/
