Grass-fed beef is often marketed with the claim that it is a healthier choice for the consumer, the animal, and the ecosystem.
While this claim often holds true, it is an oversimplification.
The nutritional quality of beef is most influenced by the botanical diversity of the cattle's diet. In practical terms, this means that cattle raised on pasture, grazing a wide variety of grasses, forbs, and shrubs, are likely to produce the highest quality beef. The diet of the cattle is reflected in the phytochemical richness of their milk and meat, as well as a more desirable fatty acid profile.
However, the grass-fed label does not necessarily mean that the cattle were raised on pasture, consuming a diversity of plants.
A product can be labeled as grass-fed if the cattle were simply fed grass pellets in a feedlot-style production model, or if they were grazing on monoculture grasses. This type of production, even though it is labeled as grass-fed, does not result in the same phytochemical richness or favorable fatty acid profiles as the diverse pasture system does. The grass pellet or monoculture grass system will produce meat and milk similar in nutritional quality to those of a grain-fed system.
The grass-fed label has the potential to indicate a nutritionally superior product, but it leaves too much room for ambiguity. The nutritional quality of meat and milk should be defined with greater clarity and rigor.
We’re almost 8-weeks away from the NSF GRFP app deadline & it’s NOT to late to apply! This Sunday, I’m sharing my NSF GRFP Application guide (via my newsletter), which includes resources, example apps from past awardees, & a timeline to help you draft a competitive ap in 8 weeks!
@Linneakh80 Yeah I looked into 2 different rooms at/near Bio5 and they were $200+. I'm gonna go to the Bio5 front desk tomorrow and see if I can get them waved somehow.
@surt_lab So I'm either reserving a room on the Keating 3rd floor making my defense catcard access only or walking 25 mins to ENR2 for the free room. I think for defenses they should wave the reservation fee....
@surt_lab I wanted to reserve a room in HSIB next to Bio5 and they said it is $280. But apparently HSIB would be free if I were a health sciences student. The only room on the 1st floor of Keating which can fit 15-20 people would be $200.
I made a post for my Instagram about graduate research fellowships in marine science (and other fields) and thought I might as well post here too since it’s scholarship season! Hopefully it’s helpful to someone 🌊

Out latest #B2WALD paper is out!! We found that three plant species responded differently to drought with varying impacts on rhizosphere microbes and metabolites. Read more here: https://t.co/ypr4XTgqa0
Excited to announce that I’m recruiting graduate students to study whether, and how, the gut microbiota of caterpillars detoxify plant defenses for their hosts. Interested? More info here: https://t.co/3ZZLVTduER and here! https://t.co/lW03r0o0fh
"As the nation’s top producer of Black undergraduates who go on to complete a Ph.D. in the natural sciences or engineering, U.M.B.C. has cracked one of the most vexing conundrums in higher education—the lack of Black students excelling in the sciences."

We are looking for a Bioinformatics Scientist to drive the development/use of high-performance shared computing systems supporting diverse computational microbiology research in our dept @UWBact. Great location & benefits, & amazing colleagues/ environment https://t.co/LkqCZvmQTz
Last semester there were 6 weeks where I couldn’t focus on my research (sickness, classes, family stuff, ect.). My undergraduate got stuck taking over some parts of my project. I reviewed all their notes yesterday and they were written so clearly! I’m so proud 🥹
I just love this figure of Colorado River water usage from the @nytclimate today. I want a poster of it. Water law is animal law, at least in the West.
