Richard Overton, the nation's oldest World War II veteran, died in Austin, TX on December 28, 2018. He was 112! He is the subject of a 2016 documentary, Mr. Overton, a film about his daily routine & thoughts on his military service.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was 15 years old when he graduated from high school. He received his bachelors degree at age 19 and his Doctorate at 26. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. #BlackHistoryMonth

Alberta Williams King, Martin Luther King Jr's mother, was a teacher until she was married (married women could not teach then) & an influential member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was shot in her church June 30th, 1974. #blackhistorymonth

Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American congresswoman in 1968. Four years later, she became the first major-party black candidate to make a bid for the U.S. presidency. #blackhistorymonth

Today we celebrate Amariyanna Copeny, also know as @LittleMissFlint. She works hard teaming with a Michigan based charity “Pack your back”, to raise money to provide over 200,000 bottles of water for residents in flint. She IS Black History. #BlackHistoryMonth2019

On this date in 1976, Patricia Roberts Harris was named Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development by President Jimmy Carter. Harris became the first black woman to hold a Cabinet position. #blackhistorymonth

On this date in Black history in 1820, the Mayflower of Liberia set sail. This was the first black emigration back to Africa. It began when 86 freed slaves left New York Harbor aboard the ship the Elizabeth, which was called the Mayflower of Liberia.

Today we're celebrating Inventor Willis Johnson. He patented the Egg Beater on this date in 1884. The device, a handle attached to a series of spring-like whisk wires, is used to help mix ingredients. Before the eggbeater, mixing was done by hand and took too much time and energy

Sojourner Truth (Isabella Baumfree), preacher, abolitionist, speaker, and women's rights advocate, was commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp on this date in 1986. Ask your history teachers about Sojourner Truth, because Black history is American history.
