Here’s how we became the world’s first Thunderbolt cable maker. 🚀
In 2009, Sumitomo Electric embarked on an ambitious journey with Intel to revolutionize connectivity. @intel Corporation envisioned a high-speed data transmission solution capable of seamlessly handling both data and video. Initially, optical fiber seemed like the answer, but it presented significant challenges: vulnerability to dust, high costs, and reliability concerns for everyday consumer use.
By closely collaborating with Intel and understanding their need for a faster, more efficient interface, Sumitomo Electric proposed a bold alternative: micro-coaxial cable technology. Originally developed for mobile phone hinges, this innovation offered the ideal combination of speed, precision, and durability for high-speed data transfer.
The result? In 2010, Sumitomo Electric achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the world’s first company to obtain certification for Thunderbolt™ cables.
Ben Hacker, General Manager of the Client Connectivity Division at Intel recently stated: “Sumitomo Electric has been a key partner in advancing Thunderbolt technology. Together, we’ve paved the way for faster, more efficient connectivity solutions. We look forward to continuing this journey with Sumitomo Electric, driving innovation and creating the best-in-class solutions for the future of digital connectivity!”
