'Ask Yourself Why There Aren't As Many Events Anymore', SA Promoter DJ Shimza Exposes The Toxic Gatekeeping and Sabotage Claims Killing Kasi Nightlife
The vibrant heartbeat of township nightlife is under threat, and it isn't just due to a shifting economy. It is being slowly suffocated by toxic narratives, internal gatekeeping, and a lack of institutional support.
Following recent challenges faced by prominent DJ and producer KayGee The Vibe, a well-known local events promoter has broken their silence on social media, sparking an urgent and painful conversation about why the entertainment scene ko kasi (in the townships) is rapidly declining.
For years, the narrative surrounding township entertainment has been plagued by rumours of sabotage and professional jealousy. When an event fails or an artist faces logistical hurdles, fingers are quickly pointed at peers and rival promoters.
Reflecting on their own painful fallout with former friends (majita), the promoter DJ Shimza Raphala revealed how these baseless accusations almost ruined their reputation.
"They would run into these kind of challenges then people would say it's me," the promoter shared. "They'd say I'm jealous of them and that I was sabotaging them, meanwhile I was also going through the same problems."
The revelation highlights a deeper, systemic issue within the community: a reflex to blame individual malice rather than acknowledging the shared structural roadblocks that everyone in the township event space faces.
While hosting events in suburban hubs or major city centres comes with standard corporate bureaucracy, the promoter points out that organising an event in the township feels like an entirely different, exhausting battleground.
"The amount of fighting we have to go through to host events is something I don't experience anywhere else in the country," they stated, contrasting the township experience with their seamless, successful events hosted outside the kasi.
From compliance red tape and local municipal pushbacks to a lack of proper venue infrastructure and security threats, township promoters are often left to fend for themselves without the institutional backing enjoyed by suburban festivals.
The ultimate tragedy of this toxic environment is the slow death of the township entertainment economy. Townships have historically been the birthplace of South Africa's most iconic musical movements, from Kwaito to Amapiano. Yet, the people keeping this culture alive are being pushed out by the very spaces they seek to uplift.
Shimza closed their emotional reflection with a haunting question that every township resident and music lover needs to consider:
If the toxic culture of blame doesn't change, and if the structural hurdles of hosting township events aren't addressed, the kasi risks losing its cultural pulse entirely, leaving its brightest stars to shine everywhere else except at home.
