A civic policy advocate and humanitarian expert writing on governance, democratic transitions, and leadership in fragile contexts. @SIMADUniversity alumnus.
How can a country find security, when POLITICIANS and police are CRIMINAL and criminals have gained the trust of some parts of society?
How can a state rebuild on such a swampy foundation?

Qs suit current #Somali situations.
The Ministry convened a strategic meeting with the UN Inter-Agency Working Group on Youth. Discussions focused on advancing the Youth, Peace & Security National Action Plan, strengthening coordination, &promoting meaningful youth inclusion in peacebuilding & governance processes.
Peace must be protected by everyone. What Mogadishu is witnessing today in stability, public activity, and hope should not be taken for granted. Anyone who undermines peace for personal ambition or political gain is threatening the country’s progress and the future of Somali youth.

The FAO #JOSP team & the Federal Ministry of Youth & Sports, led by the Director General, discussed implementation of the #YOUACT project, its impact & opportunities for scale-up. Youth remain key drivers of agrifood systems, natural resource governance & peacebuilding in Somalia
You can now earn a PhD in China by creating a product instead of writing a 100-page dissertation!
China has grown tired of PhD students writing research papers that no one reads and is now demanding that they build real products instead.
This radical shift in the philosophy of higher education in China represents a formal transition from "textual academia" to "utilitarian academia," where the traditional doctoral dissertation is replaced by the creation of a tangible product. The brilliance of this idea lies in its direct approach to the scourge of "dead research" that consumes years of researchers' efforts only to remain locked away in drawers, thus transforming the university from an intellectual silo into a productive engine that feeds the market and fosters innovation immediately.
Ambassadors of Türkiye, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia to Somalia are in Las Anod, the capital of the Northeastern State. The message is clear and unequivocal: ‘We want a united Somalia.’
Very informative. It offers a poetic analogy of Trump’s recent moves toward Venezuela and what they signal to the world. Global power systems appear to be entering a perfect storm.

The 🇺🇸 is deeply concerned by reports that Federal Government of Somalia officials have destroyed a US-funded World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and illegally seized 76 metric tons of donor-funded food aid for vulnerable Somalis. The Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance.

This is another clear example of manufacturing instability for personal political privileges. The former president is claiming that Somalia is facing its worst moment in food security and that security guards are suffering from poor incomes. There is no evidence, no data, and no statistics behind these statements. Somalia’s current GDP is significantly higher than what it was during his own term in Villa Somalia, and national economic indicators do not support the crisis narrative he is trying to create.
Yesterday he arrived wearing a cap branded with his own name, the same branding he used when he won the presidency. Today he is back in Mogadishu after years of absence and is running again for the presidency without forming a political party or presenting any structured political program. He has returned only with the brand “Farmaajo,” not with ideas, policies, or solutions.
His speech reinforces exactly what I wrote in my recent article on Manufacturing Instability to Block Progress. These narratives are designed to create fear, weaken public confidence, and manipulate the political environment for personal advantage.

It is time for civil society to rethink its support for recycled political actors whose privileges continue to hold #Somalia back. Responsible leadership requires a principled civic stance.
My new piece, “Manufacturing Instability to Block Progress” draws insights from @RachelKleinfeld ‘s work on privilege violence and ICG’s 2020 report “Staving Off Violence Around Somalia’s Elections. These frameworks show how political actors manufacture crises to block reforms.
Somalia marked African Statistics Day 2025 this week, a moment that goes beyond a yearly commemoration.
Our National Bureau of Statistics is producing the MPI, SDG reports and national datasets that will guide the Transformation Plan 2025–2029 and return Somalia to global reporting systems after many years. Strong statistics build governance, cut through misinformation, strengthen public trust and support evidence-based policy.
Reliable data will now stand as a key measure of government performance and national development.
Somalia today marked African Statistics Day 2025 in a high-level, well-attended national commemoration in Mogadishu, Somalia. The event underpinned the essential role of reliable, timely data in shaping policy, planning and development in Africa.
This year’s theme — “Leveraging Innovations in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive and Prosperous Society for Africans” — resonates strongly with Somalia’s ongoing transformation. SNBS continues to modernise data systems, expand digital data collection and strengthen administrative records to support peace, justice, stabilization and national development priorities.
The commemoration drew wide participation from Federal Ministries, Members of Parliament, Federal Member States, Office of the Attorney General, other government institutions, World Bank, UN agencies, development and humanitarian partners, academia, media organisations and civil society, with all speakers reaffirming shared commitment to evidence-based governance and decision-making.
SNBS continues building a modern, coordinated and resilient national statistical system that meets international standards. We thank all partners and stakeholders for joining us in celebrating #AfricanStatisticsDay2025 and for supporting Somalia’s journey towards a more data-driven and prosperous future. @AbdisalamHumbul@abdirahm_omar

Dear PM @HamzaAbdiBarre ,
At a recent public forum, a young woman told you how her ministry had ignored her CV and denied her a permanent position. You immediately ordered your staff to bring her to your office, and within days she was received and heard.
If the complaint of one citizen can reach your desk and secure action, why not the long-standing outcry of thousands who pass daily through Sahal Terminal?
Please read my follow up piece on the subject.
