We sometimes found multiple loess units with the older one having a red color. The deepest loess will have a well-developed paleosol with pedogenic carbonates in the lower portion of the paleosol.

@soilsdiva 14 - 16" for the compacted layer would not be unusual for a field that had been deep plowed when wet using a moldboard plow. Brome is notorious for sucking up the water.

@soilsdiva I grew up hunting fox (red) and gray squirrels in the Ozarks of Arkansas. The gray squirrels are easier to clean, and they taste better too. Fox squirrels have a stronger, gamey flavor because of their eating habitat.
