I understand your point with the additional info needed apart from mnemonic.
But IMO you over estimate the "clean" offline linux machine setup. You criticise bad UX with HWWs (I am not saying it cannot and should not be improved), but then you describe a setup where you use disguised and encrypted wallet backups and transferring PSBTs to offline linux devices for signing.
You also mention storing encrypted backups in multiple locations. You can still do that with your mnemonic if you want to. You can even write all the additional information necessary into a .txt file, encrypt it properly and upload it into your cloud. Should normies do it? No. But someone comfortable with your proposed workflow, should be able to do so.
You say that a general purpose machine (or a disguised file) draws less attention. Yes, true. But a small HWW is much easier to hide compared to a laptop. The danger lies in someone knowing that you own coins (in which this case the attacker will search for a hww and/or will take your laptop and try to extract the coins). I believe you can hide the HWW very well very easily. And if you don't want 24 words laying in your house, you can still go the encrypted file path (though, I would not recommend it).
I disagree with the conclusion to move away from HWW and back to Bitcoin Core for self custody. Especially for the normies. But also, because I believe it's better to have small, dedicated machines for Bitcoin (what you actually disagrees with?). You can btw also use them in his offline setup (take a clean linux machine, transfer the psbt from an online computer to the clean linux machine, attach the bitbox and sign it there).
Note: I had some similar thoughts in the past, but whenever I thought about the "clean", offline linux machine, I thought about how such a machine can be more optimal for what I want to do with it. You could make it more tamper resistant, remove code which you do not need, etc. And in the end, I end up with a HWW. HWWs can be improved, sure, but I believe the improvement path offers better results than going back to Bitcoin Core for storing the coins.
@Wayne0708@YdoubleL@COLDCARDwallet@grok Yes. A passphrase would protect you in this scenario (and in many other scenarios as well). Even a simple passphrase has a high chance of protection (though, the more "complex" the passphrase, the better).
@satsklepter@BitBoxSwiss Open source also means every security researcher can inspect the code, test it, and hunt for vulnerabilities (not just the internal team). This can uncover and fix issues faster, especially when paired with bug bounties and responsible disclosure.
@armankhon Why does solving leetcode help so much, if LLMs can just solve them on their own nowadays? Or even in the near future? What is your advice for getting tech jobs, if it is even worth it in 1-2 years?
@hodlonaut Perhaps it is your framing. You do not point out the facts neutrally. Instead it looks like you are just mocking people because they value self custody differently than you do. Ofc you are allowed to do that, but maybe don't expect neutral responses then?
@hodlonaut I don't know if the majority of MSTR share buyers think that way. If you know the downside is to abandon self custody (and are fully aware of the consequences), then there are valid reasons to buy MSTR. It just comes down to how much one values self-custody.
