@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley Because we are trying to challenge the narratives. I barely even looked at what you guys were talking about before I was like wtf. Without speaking up and saying "let's focus on this instead of that", we are going perpetuate stigmas and issues for future generations.
@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley Okay but you could try to refrain from the "I guess I can't EVER do XYZ if that's the case" bullshit. You can learn the difference between celebrating someone's accomplishments and feeding into a stigmatized situation.
@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley If you know someone has been working hard to gain or lose weight and you see their progress, cool. Tell them you're proud of their hard work. See someone you haven't in a while has lost a ton of weight but you don't know why? Cool, you don't need to mention it.
@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley We don't need to comment on each other's bodies. Ever. Whether that's skin, physique, hair, whatever. Find ways to celebrate someone without making it about that.
@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley Just as telling someone you love their makeup is a lot different than saying "oh, you're wearing makeup and you look good now".
@scottam2 @FairfieldJen@dubet12 @beckyainsley Those things are not inherent qualities of a person though. Those are things that they DO, not things they ARE. Complimenting someone on their shirt looking great on them is a lot different than saying "oh, you lost weight and look great now".
Do you ever think 1999 was trying to be like "danger, danger!" and we all just focused on Y2K, so it's somewhere eating popcorn watching this *gestures vaguely* all unfold?
Today I spoke with my sister, a Registered Nurse on a COVID unit in Alberta. What she told me should really emphasize the importance of maintaining vigilance, despite the government's plan to reduce restrictions. A short thread:
Prepping a quarantine email to my boss: Hey, just wanted to confirm that you still need me at the office this afternoon? Not sure if you're there. Let me know. I showered.
