Bill Brand’s Masstransiscope is still incredibly cool: a vibrant zoetrope in the old Myrtle Ave station. See it from the right side of a Manhattan-bound B/Q leaving DeKalb. A fun side effect of modernizing the DeKalb Interlocking will be seeing it at full speed, as god intended.
@kaiwharton@Gothamist But there was the $1mm+ reno…if you look up the “before” photos, a young person could definitely make do with what it was like before.
@jtown1010@SarahBurris@RonLPitts I totally agree. Of course they are proud of her. They just have to tear down elite higher ed for the cameras and their followers.
@bags@BulwarkClips This anti-Harvard talk is just an act to appease their conservative followers. They do still have a reality show—it’s scripted bc of course they want their kids to go to great colleges. Trade schools for everyone else.
@KnightswhosayN2@BulwarkClips I think they are secretly very proud of her—but have to do this act because they have a huge, conservative and need to do some pre-explaining why their daughter is going to liberal, higher ed.
@AsianWinky@CraigJStrachan@TripleNetTyler Irvine Spectrum is a mall complex. 3rd St is a pedestrian mall near a beach. When things close on 3rd St, you aren’t just “stuck” in a mall in suburbia. I was in a hotel for a week next to IS. You have to walk forever just to get to the mall from across the street.
@Lben@chriskh I am usually at home by 11-12. But I have to praise NYC for that one night when one of my little kids got pinworm from school. It was 2:30am when we discovered this to my horror. I immediately marched out the door, ran to the local 24hr pharmacy and was able to get medication.
@TheFarcissist@chriskh On that last note, recently spent a week in Irvine, CA. The driving and parking and lack of walking was a bit too much, but so much incredibly good and diverse Asian food in most strip malls.
@TheFarcissist@chriskh True, but *for me*, city keeps me active. I grew up suburban and revert to this crazy level of laziness when I’m back at my parents (2K steps max, daily). Being in a city works for me bc all I do is walk out the door, then I can be out, active all day, 15-20k steps daily
@chriskh My day: Bryant Park zoom call; Taiwanese meal at Gulp; Rose Reading Room to work; teen wanted to get special M&Ms in Times Square, but first stopped in to St. Pat’s Cathedral to see this mural. Then back to Bklyn for more Taiwanese at Yuan is Here.
@TheFarcissist@chriskh In my part of Brooklyn, you can wake up at 5 and go walk, bike, or jog in Brooklyn Bridge Park. On days I have to drop a kid off on upper east side for sports, I do a super long morning walk through Central Park, Times Square, Bryant Park before crowds come.
@pokeywhite@chriskh I grew up in CO, the landscape is my bones, I miss it so much. The driving I could do without. Have been in NYC since the 90s—and Brooklyn Bridge Park is my east coast mountains. Taking the Q train over the Manhattan Bridge w/ *that* view sends every passenger into deep thoughts.
@RLaspari@seeingglimpses@chriskh There was a lull when the kids were kids—we tag-team went out. But since age 11 or so, we’ve been doing things regularly—concerts, performances. I go to a museum every time I have a dr appt. Went to Bryant Park/NYPL Rose Room with teen today so we could both work on our laptops.
