If only a campaign organisation (ahem @mediareformUK) had proposed this, endorsed by a then major political party leader, in 2018. Imagine where we’d be! https://t.co/8zqznD356w
Of course UK media is highly concentrated. Supposedly obsolete “legacy” outlets dominate news on social media-look at Ofcom surveys of news consumption- while a tiny no. of tech co.s own key platforms. You don’t need a “ministry of truth” to point this out https://t.co/46qnD5YXvR
Jason Arday has tragically died after a vicious campaign of press hounding and harassment. We urgently need an inquiry into the culture of the press. Add your name to demand one now:

Those of us who’ve spent time in this profession know how deeply racist it is too. We see who gets hyper-scrutinised and who gets the benefit of the doubt. Who gets hounded and who gets let off the hook.
The double standards stink.
The British media is dominated by some of the most privileged people in society, who get to decide what counts as a story, what gets sustained as a story, and who gets to move on from one.
Why was Peter Mandelson not deemed a major public-interest issue? He came back from what should have been two career-ending scandals, toured TV studios and wrote op-eds. Serious scrutiny only came at the very end.
Jason Arday, meanwhile, was relentlessly hounded by the press.
We’re delighted to co-sign the launch of Better!, calling for radical reforms to taxes, votes and (of course) media policy in the UK - starting with democratising the BBC and breaking up the power of media moguls

Britain is facing a crisis of trust and power.
That's why today we're launching Better! - an alliance to remove the grip on power, wealth and information by the few - and return it to the many - for a better future for all.
Votes, taxes, media. Together, we can break the cycle.
Is local and civic media part of Britain’s essential infrastructure? As media reform and devolution accelerate, the window for action is narrow. It’s time to test a Civic and Foundational Media Forum—and ask what communities need to speak for themselves https://t.co/xHIxSc5XN5
Thank you @labourlewis for speaking at this year’s Media Democracy Festival about the dangers of unchecked media power.
Press barons and Big Tech work hand in glove to distort our democracy - we need a truly independent and accountable media, starting with a democratised BBC

It was great to speak at the @mediareformUK Media Democracy Festival recently.
I’ve been involved with the Media Reform Coalition since I first became an MP ten years ago. Back then, the focus was mainly on traditional media oligarchs. That’s a good instinct, but things have really moved on.
Nowadays, the real power is one floor down – with Big Tech and their control of information infrastructure.
That’s why we need to fight for a digital commons. Public service internet, open standards, public code for public money. A democratised, beefed-up BBC ready to take a place in the often hostile 21st century media ecosystem.
Defeating the oligarchs was never going to be enough. We have to take back the infrastructure underneath them.

Congratulations @DaleVince for taking on the power of the press, and winning!
Sadly, justice is still out of reach for members of the public who are subject to falsehoods, inaccuracies and abuse by the UK's unregulated press.
Under an independent press regulator, everyone would have access to justice without having to go through the courts - https://t.co/dCzPzx0bWY

The Independent Media Association (IMA), the UK's largest network of independent media outlets, unequivocally condemns Lloyds Banking Group's decision to debank The Canary, a member of our co-operative, and calls on the bank to publicly clarify and justify its actions.
What does the BBC stand for in 2026? Our submission to @mediareformUK's Alternative Green Paper argues the next Royal Charter should answer that with a new Public Purpose: making the BBC an anchor for local journalism 👇

Latest factcheck: @CityAM publish piece packed with falsehoods on media standards.
The piece claims the Leveson Inquiry "recommended legislative changes be made to the operations of the press". Leveson recommended no such thing; he said that newspapers should be responsible for their own complaints-handler, but that it should be operated independently and not by newspaper executives.

Panic at @Telegraph over fears that Andy Burnham will put the public ahead of press owners, as they desperately rail against the idea of standards for the media:
https://t.co/v6zy71sXMq
Update: reports indicate this panic has also spread to Guido & City AM. More to follow no doubt.
Some facts:
- Leveson/Hacked Off support independent press regulation. This means when someone complains about a newspaper article, an independent body looks at & rules on it, not a politician or representatives of the press. This is not "state" or "government" regulation - it is a level of regulation we have in almost every other major industry.
- Most news content read by the public on social media is from established news publishers like newspapers, not influencers. The press is as powerful as ever and the case for regulation is urgent.
- Most of the national press is not regulated. They are in "IPSO" which is effectively a trade association controlled by politicians & press execs, which occasionally handles complaints (badly).
