This email couldn’t have come at a better time 😭
I’m leaving for a 10-day holiday, and instead of being excited, I’ve been feeling SO guilty about taking time off.
All I can think about is how my ads will perform, how I’ll check the ad account, what I’ll miss while I’m away, and whether I’ll fall behind if I’m not working or learning every single day.
It’s crazy how you can love your work so much that even taking a break starts feeling like you’re doing something wrong.
But I also know these next 10 days are going to be full of memories that I wouldn’t want to miss.
Just trying to remind myself that taking 10 days off doesn’t mean losing all the progress I’ve made.
And that it’s okay to enjoy life outside of work, too.
I don't want flying cars.
I want rivers and ocean I can swim in with friends.
I want food that isn't full of toxic chemicals and clean soil to grow it in.
I want raw nature and wilderness and places on the earth I can get lost without seeing another human.
I want air that isn't "geoengineered" and polluted.
Science is cool. Technological advancement is cool, but I don't think this makes us happier as humans.
Real human connection and clean, natural food lead to happiness. This I know. Flying cars? I'm not sure.
Maybe I am a troglodyte...
In a world where some pride themselves on pushing out 50 ads a day, the art of sharpening your axe has never been more important.
50 swings of a blunt blade.
Sharpen that fucker.
One swing.
BAM.
Top of the ad account.
Juss like dah.
nobody skips a story they want to know the ENDING of
that's the entire logic behind the ads i'm building rn: 90 seconds of pure entertainment - action, comedy, one emotional beat - and the product hidden in the final seconds
and the ending is where the product quietly steps in - it inherits every bit of emotion the story just built
entertainment holds retention, then you quietly introduce a product
i put my whole scripting system into a PDF playbook - every step, all 6 master prompts copy-paste ready, and the mistakes i already made for you
rt + comment "STORY" and i'll send it to you (must follow so i can DM)
U will only win long term by having an edge. And your edge doesn’t need to be complicated. It just has to be the most expensive, time consuming and difficult task you can think of to beat your competition. When you build an edge, you develop a sense of conviction that can’t be faked. Because you know that 99% of people are not willing or capable of going through the fire you went through to get here. I’ve been working on the same core thing for the last 5 years… direct response. The only thing that might change is the medium through which I choose to generate income. Whether it’s my marketing agency, or my daily newsletter, or scaling an offer on cold traffic - the core thing is always direct response. That’s why I can’t really give out beginner advice. I can’t tell you how to get to the position I’m in because there is no shortcut, I just kept doing the same thing and let the rest fall into place. I kept tweeting. I kept writing. I kept paying for consulting. I kept reading. That’s all it is. The first time I got paid as a freelance copywriter was when I was 17. I'm 24 now. The first direct response advertising book I read was when I was 16. The principles haven’t changed since then, and never will change regardless of market conditions or AI. This is what gives me my edge. This is why my business has a ‘soul’. Because it is built off of true value that you can’t buy or SOP. You can’t simply emulate us with systems and templates. Focus on principles and put yourself in a vehicle where you can build until you die. If you don’t do this now, you’l find yourself stuck on a merry go round of re-acting rather than pro-acting until you eventually throw in the towel and go back to being average again
Was talking with a new CA Pro Member the other day, and he was asking how he can help his creative strategists keep winning month-after-month. Might seem like a weird question, but it actually makes a lot of sense and here's why:
When a creative strategist starts with a brand, they don't have the curse of knowledge. They come in, they come up with ads, the ads get tested, and sometimes some of those ads work.
Fast forward 3 months...or 6 months though...
And it's a different story. Now the creative strategist feels like they've tested every angle and ad under the sun. They've seen data on their own ads. They've seen the data on other creative strategists' ads too. And they might also have tunnel vision by this point - since they've been thinking about the same brand for months.
This is the point of decay. Where creative strategists burn out. Where performance goes off a cliff. Where they start looking for a new job. Where the business owner goes "damn, what happened to them?"
So what can we do about it?
Well the screenshot I included with this post includes some of the big ones. And I won't repeat them all in-depth...
But the big idea here is as follows:
When you get into a rut or burn out...
The answer is typically to expand your mind.
And specifically you do that by finding inspiration from unlikely places.
For example, let's look at that Cable TV Suggestion.
Go binge watch 4 hours of some reality TV show like 1000-lb Sisters...and pretend you are an anthropologist. What's their daily life like? What kind of aspirations do they have? What are their personal dynamics like? What do the ancillary characters on the show talk like? What do they care about? What kind of products do they use? What do they believe?
Or, if you're selling to older men, watch the History Channel or some show about ghost hunters or Alaskan homesteaders, or whatever.
Do all of that, and pay attention to the commercials too. What products are they selling? What's the messaging? What do the advertisers assume about the market as far as knowledge about their pain points, their aspirations, their social status, etc?
And the whole time, be thinking "how could X be used in an ad selling my product/service?"
You're looking for ideas. Hooks. Ad formats. The weirder the better. No judgement. No filter. Write them all down...
And then later, you can revisit the list and start developing new ad concepts from them.
Plus, as a bonus...
If you lead a creative team, you can literally make this a group exercise...
Get all of your creative strategists together on a Zoom Call and have one person streaming Cable TV for two hours. Have everyone watching and writing down ideas and sharing with one another. Take a break after the first hour, where everyone shares some of their ideas and then the team jams and riffs on them for 15 minutes. Then do a second hour, followed by another 15 minute jam.
That's just one example...
But it's a great way to keep fresh ideas flowing and to stay out of a creative rut.
