12. Diet in patients with DVT
Foods to Avoid
- Kale
- Spinach
- Brussel Sprouts
- Chard
- Avoid green vegetables as they contain Vitamin K which increases the chance of forming a clot.
11. INR check-ups
- Every 1-4 weeks
- Normal INR in patients taking Warfarin : 2-3
- High INR means slower clotting
- Normal INR in a healthy person 0.8-1.2
7. Side effects of treatment
- Warfarin : Risk to foetus (teratogenicity, maternal bleeding) so not given during pregnancy or suspected pregnancy.
- Heparin : Excessive bleeding, Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) requires disconsolation of all heparin.
5. Management of DVT
- Offer apixaban or rivaroxaban first line, and if these are not suitable, low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for at least 5 days followed by dabigatran or edoxaban, or LMWH concurrently with a vitamin K antagonist for at least 5 days.
