On the night the gas came, twenty three railway men at Bhopal station were already dead, including his own boss. He was choking, his eyes were burning, and he did not know yet what was in the air.

He stayed on the platform anyway, and he did not leave it for the rest of the night.

His name was Ghulam Dastagir.

He was the deputy station superintendent at Bhopal Junction. On the night of 2 December 1984, around forty tons of methyl isocyanate escaped from the Union Carbide pesticide plant and moved across the sleeping city. It is still the worst industrial disaster the world has ever seen.

He had been working late on paperwork. At about one in the morning he stepped onto the platform to check an incoming train, and felt his eyes burn and his throat close.

Understand what a railway station is on a night like that. It is the one place in the city that keeps delivering people into the poison, train after train, hundreds at a time, all of them stepping out onto a platform that will kill them.

He worked out what that meant faster than almost anyone in Bhopal did.

The Gorakhpur Express was standing at the platform with twenty minutes still to go before departure. He ignored the timetable and every rule that governed it, and sent that train out of the city early. Everyone on board lived.

Then he sent word up and down the line, to Vidisha, to Itarsi, to every station he could reach, and told them to stop all traffic into Bhopal. Do not send us any more people.

He could have run. His colleagues were lying dead around him and the platform was filling with people who were gasping and vomiting and weeping. He stayed. He moved from platform to platform through the night, helping people, and sent an emergency call to every railway office within reach until ambulances and doctors finally arrived.

Thousands of people are alive because a middle ranking railway official refused to leave his post.

He paid the full price. The gas stayed in his lungs. He spent nineteen years in and out of hospitals and died in 2003, and the illness that killed him was the one he breathed in that night.

In 2023 a series was made about that night, and the character based on him was given a different name. So even the people who watched it and cried never learned who he actually was.

His name was Ghulam Dastagir, and the reason the death toll at Bhopal was not far higher is that one man decided the trains were his responsibility.

जून का महीना चल रहा है. देश में भयंकर उमस और गर्मी है तो मी लॉर्ड महोदय यहां कैसे खेलते? पसीना निकलता. कहीं बेहोश हो जाते तो? मी लॉर्ड के मनोरंजन में कहीं कोई कमी न रह जाये इसलिये मोदी जी के कानून मंत्री किरण रिजिजू ने खुद आगे बढ़कर लंडन में टूर्नामेंट कराने का इंतज़ाम कराया.

भारत का कानून मंत्रालय मी लॉर्ड और उनके चेले-चमचों का खेल स्पॉन्सर कर रहा है.

बैडमिंटन तो अकेले खेला नहीं जा���ा इसलिये मुख्य न्यायाधीश का साथ देने देश कानून मंत्री भी लंडन पहुंचे हुये हैं. उन्होंने और मी लॉर्ड ने मिलकर बैडमिंटन टूर्नामेंट का उद्घाटन किया. पांच लाख का इनाम भी रखा है. 1000 रुपये एंट्री फीस. सूर्यकांत और रिजिजू के अलावा भारत के 150 जज और वकील इस वक्त लंडन में बैडमिंटन टूर्नामेंट खेल रहे हैं.

कितना सुंदर दृश्य होगा! भारत का मुख्य न्यायाधीश जो युवाओं को 'कॉक्रोच' समझता है और युवाओं को 'कॉक्रोच' बनाने वाली सरकार का कानून मंत्री एक साथ बैडमिंटन खेल रहे हैं. एक से बढ़कर एक शॉट्स मार रहे हैं. चेले-चमटे तालियां बजा रहे हैं. दमकते-महकते माहौल में बियर, व्हिस्की परोसी जा रही है.

मी लॉर्ड और माननीय मंत्री जब खेल रहे होंगे तब उनके हा�� में रैकेट होगा. जब नहीं खेल रहे होंगे तो हाथ में बियर या व्हिस्की का ग्लास होगा. बैडमिंटन की बारिकियों के अलावा तब दोनों लोग, चुस्कियां लेते हुये, भारत को विश्वगुरु बनाने गंभीर चर्चा करते होंगे.

ब्रिटेन की राजधानी में, ब्रिटेन के गुलाम भारत की न्यायपालिका और कार्यपालिका का ऐसा मिलन अब तक कम से कम मैंने नहीं देखा या पढ़ा था.

मोदी जी चाहते हैं कि जनता सोना न खरीदे, बैलगाड़ी से चले, शादी-ब्याह का आयोजन न करे ,पैसा बचाये ताकि उनकी असफलताओं को ढंका जा सके. लेकिन इस देश का इलीट क्लास, देश को चूसकर भी लंडन में मौज कर रहा है. पर मोदी जी कुछ नहीं बोलते.

ABD’de bir aile, sahiplendikleri köpeğin yeni evine alışamadığını düşünmüştü çünkü köpek, üst üste üç gece evden kaçıp eski barınağına geri döndü.

Aile, üçüncü gece onu takip etti. Köpek barınağa girer girmez eski kafesine gitmek yerine doğrudan büyük bir köpeğin kafesine koştu.

Barınak çalışanları, iki köpeğin burada çok yakın arkadaş olduğunu anlattı. Karşılıklı kafeslerde kalan ikili, her gece birbirlerine bakarak uyuyordu.

Aile bunun üzerine köpeğin aslında eski hayatını özlemediğini, barınaktaki en yakın arkadaşını yalnız bırakmak istemediğini fark etti.

Hikâyeden etkilenen aile, sonunda büyük köpeği de sahiplenerek iki dostu yeniden bir araya getirdi.

Dün akşam bizim sitede oturan genç bir kızın peşine iki serseri takılmış; lâf atarak, taciz ederek sitenin önüne kadar gelmişler. Dışarıdaki gürültüyü duyunca balkona çıktım; bir de baktım ki, sitemizde yaşayan beyaz köpek Bulut adamlardan birinin bacağını ısırmış, ikisi de bağırarak kaçıyorlar.
Bulut bir sokak köpeği idi, uzun zaman önce kendiliğinden sitemize gelip yerleşti. Bir kulübe yaptırdık, çip taktırdık, bizim köpeğimiz oldu.
Bulut sitedeki herkesi tanır. İlköğretimde okuyan çocuklar kışın sabahın karanlığında servis aracını beklerken, o da onların yanında bekler. Yaşlı komşularımız bir sokak ötedeki markete giderken, o da onlarla beraber gidip gelir. Yaşadığımız yerde yaban domuzları var, gece sabaha kadar etrafı kolaçan edip domuzları siteye yaklaştırmaz. Dün akşam da sitedeki genç kızı korumuş.
Hayatım boyunca insanlara çok iyilik yaptım, karşılığında hep nankörlük ve düşmanlık gördüm. Köpeğin sahip olduğu vefa duygusu insanda yok.

Starvation crushed his tiny body, yet he still wagged his tail and begged us not to leave 💔
The little dog was rushed to the emergency vet and given the name Sugar Snap.

For days, he fought for his life. Sepsis, anemia, blood transfusions, and endless setbacks nearly took him away. But even lying on the hospital floor with tubes attached to his tiny body, Sugar Snap still wagged his tail whenever someone showed him kindness. The light in his eyes never disappeared.

Today, Sugar Snap is no longer fighting just to survive. He’s finally living the beautiful life he always deserved.
