Translator, landscape archaeologist, etc. Former @BritishAcademy_ postdoctoral fellow @durham_uni. Book on early medieval Wessex out now with @boydellbrewer.
A very special package arrived today. Huge thanks to @CanaryCaroline & all at @boydellbrewer, and to everyone who cheered me along the way.
‘Burial, Landscape and Identity in Early Medieval Wessex’ is OUT NOW!
Well this was a nice thing to greet me today - my book about #swords is out now! *Enormous* thanks to @CanaryCaroline & the smashing team @boydellbrewer, you were wonderful. The small matter of a gallery refurb delayed it for 5 years so it means a lot to see it out at *long* last
Just been talking to @DrSueOosthuizen about the arrival (or otherwise) of the English after the end of Roman Britain for @HistoryExtra podcast. One of the questions she asks is,"should we be talking about 'Anglo-Saxon England' at all for that period?"
And in addition to #MedievalTwitter, there’s also quite a lot in here that should appeal to #LandscapeArchaeology tweeps, prehistorians, and anyone interested the long-term biographies of monuments and persistent places.
NEW: Burial, Landscape and Identity in Early Medieval Wessex by Kate Mees
Mees explores how the cultural & physical environment influenced funerary traditions during the period and includes a gazetteer of over 200 burial sites in the area https://t.co/zEXFb0XLdm #MedievalTwitter
@dbrear2 Yes, discussed possible images with production dept. before deciding on this painting, which I thought would work well! So, bought the licence and the cover designer worked their magic. All the maps & plans inside are my own or redrawn, but a professional illustrator can be used.
Excited to reveal that my book is now dressed to impress (all you early medieval burial/landscape enthusiasts) and almost ready to hit the shelves..! ✨
It's available to pre-order, should you so wish, here: https://t.co/2OPX5Zh9Cy #medievaltwitter#landscapearchaeology

The first publication 'Gender and medieval archaeology: Storming the castle' from my @MSCActions project was published in @AntiquityJ today! I am proud of it, and I hope it speaks to some of the issues we are still facing in academia #genderbias#feminism https://t.co/OcFKysLCls
