An entire generation or two (the Boomers and Gen X's) were taught that the highest virtue you can practice toward your children is liberalism.

"You can do/be whatever you want!"

"Figure it out yourself!"

"You have autonomous freedom and choice!"

How the world works 101:

When being right wing is generally cooler than being "moderate and nuanced" (a leftist), then you will see large institutions predominantly led by right wingers. Not overnight, but over a medium-term time horizon.

Few people are able to resist the pull of the popular on a dispositional level. This is a feature, not a bug (more on that in a moment).

Some examples to illustrate:

When there is a stronger popular social stigma for being fat rather than fit, you will see more PCA elders, SBC pastors, etc. becoming fit.

When there is a stronger popular social stigma for communicating in a female-coded manner (Matt Chandler) than communicating in an ordinary and direct way, you will see more broadly evangelical preachers adopt the plainer style.

When there is a stronger popular social stigma for being some shade of "Zionist" than the some shade of "America First" or "Nationalist," you will see more mid-level leaders in large institutions adopt the latter in favor of the former.

This is how God made the world; it's a feature, not a bug. God designed the world hierarchically, such that a relatively small percentage of effective leaders are able, through the formation of popular opinion—which is something like "fashion"—to directionally shape outsized segments of the population.

This dynamic is why shepherds lead large herds of sheep. It's why one pastor leads 150+ people. It's why nations are ruled by a small cohort of kings, judges, congressman, governors, etc. It's why one CEO can found and direct a business, leveraging total (or near-total) control to direct the activities of tens of thousands and serve millions.

The principle is fairly easy to extrapolate from Exodus 18 if you're looking for a biblical expression of what I'm talking about, but even that instance in Scripture is just one example of a principle God wove into nature itself. In that passage, we see that God had already placed potential leaders at various rungs of the hierarchy (leaders of 10s, 50s, 100s, etc.) in the nation.

Moses just had to identify and deputize them, but they were already there.

One of the most important things you can figure out is which role you play, where you fall in the hierarchy, and then to live at peace with that assignment from the Lord.

You will fall in different places in different hierarchies. Figuring out which seat is yours in any given hierarchy is essential to doing your duty there.

I’ve been asked this question a few times by other men and, I’m sorry to say, it’s mostly luck (or destiny, however you want to frame it).

Having asked many married couples I know about how they met, every person I’ve asked has said some variation of, “It just kind of happened”.

“I was playing music in a bar with my band like I did every weekend, when this girl walked in that I’d never seen before and turned out she was peer-pressured by her friends into being there that night (since she normally never went to bars). I was curious about her and we hit it off.”

“My family and hers had known each other since before we were born, we grew up together, it just made sense, both for the benefit of us and our families, and our families facilitated
our relationship.”

“We happen to bump into each other while going to *insert extra-curricular activity that one or neither of us attended before*, and we both instantly felt attracted to each other. Mutual love-at-first sight.”

I could go on, but you get the idea.

The most actionable advice I can give, since I did say it’s MOSTLY luck, is:

Be confident (comfortable, optimistic, positively self-assured, stoically self-disciplined, etc) and competent (capable, sly, persistent, etc) in whatever you’re doing.

Be fit and be strong (this includes physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually).

Go out of your way to doing things socially. Whatever your hobby or interest, find groups to do it with. Find that place, that isn’t work/school and home, where people gather.

And, finally, have enough willpower to act if it just so happens that you run into someone you like.

Doing all of the above will maximize your chances of finding that fated“random encounter”, while also doing a lot of good for yourself, which in turn, will only further increase your chances.
