In 2025, TEAM BCPS paid out nearly $6 million in vacation payouts.

A vacation payout is the money an employer pays employees for unused, accrued paid time off.

Why does this matter? Because before 2025, the most BCPS had ever paid out was about $3.5 million (in 2024)—and that’s also about what BCPS is projected to pay again in 2026 and 2027, according to the FY2027 adopted budget left by former Superintendent Dr. Rogers.

Here are the questions I want answered:
- Why was it so high in 2025?
- Who received these payouts (and how much)?
- Why did vacation payouts jump so dramatically starting in 2022?

A few nights ago, I did something that felt simple, joyful, and honestly pretty “normal mom” in the moment: I took my 13-year-old son to see Morgan Wallen in concert.

If you know my son, you know this part matters—Morgan Wallen is his favorite artist. Not “one of,” not “lately,” not “kind of.” Favorite. The kind of favorite where the songs are on repeat in the car, where lyrics become background noise to homework, where a kid lights up just hearing the first few notes.

And then something unexpected happened: I was offered a last-minute opportunity to take him—one of those rare chances that pops up and you either grab it or you don’t. I grabbed it. Because I’m his mom, and because childhood is short, and because sometimes the best memories come from the plans you didn’t have time to overthink.
