Are you teaching a course in phonetics or phonology this semester/quarter? Would you like your students to get some hands-on experience with linguistic research? Help us annotate [thousands of!] vocalizations from babies all over the world! https://t.co/CC5Rtp8f1w
But I can't let perfect be the enemy of good. If you find a mistake, just tell me! The tutorials aren't peer-reviewed or anything, so I don't much credit for them. I just think DSP is super important and I wanted to make it accessible to more people.
Also, after sitting on this for a very (very) long time, I'm finally publicly sharing the tutorial series I wrote on digital signal processing 🎶🗣️>👩💻>🔢:
https://t.co/nk05wQ7ekb
I was scared to share these for a long time, because I'm not a trained engineer. I anticipate that my code isn't perfect, and I may have made some mistakes given that I'm self taught.
Back (temporarily) from a very sleepy Twitter hiatus to announce a couple cool new products (idk where I'm supposed to self-promote anymore, so here we are)
# 1: new paper showing that kids who hear "bustier" input have larger receptive vocabularies: https://t.co/f4k91QkATV
we are hiring TT in phonology this year!
https://t.co/0jx89XQmR7
The core qualification...[is] expertise in phonological theory. Additional qualifications... are expertise in phonological experimentation, fieldwork experience, and computational expertise.
Ppl in developmental labs: how do you allow caregivers to monitor their kids in the testing room during experiments? Wall-mounted web cam streaming to caregiver’s cell? Baby monitor? We had sthg more elaborate at UMD but it involved construction and I want to avoid that.
@Fede_Bulgarelli They were trying not to give me admin rights on my own damn computer. I was like, there is 0 chance I’m coming to you goons every time I need to update R.
Sometimes I wonder if UCLA admin sits up at night concocting ways to put a damper on my research program: 6 mos to hire a research coordinator, 4 mos to get a vendor for audio equipment approved (not ordered. just approved), 3 mos to get an RA at another institution hired...
@icphs2023 today starting at 2:40, our session co-organized with @CristiaAlex on “Novel approaches to studying vocal development.” Lots of (diverse) languages, lots of babies, and of course because it’s me and Alex, LOTS of daylong recordings - hope to see you there!

@NIH_LRP Pls contact me if you want to learn more about the program. I will make time to talk to you about it and am happy to share all of my application materials.
I am grateful to receive a renewal on my @NIH_LRP award to study speech processing in preschoolers. It will cancel my outstanding debt, allowing me to buy a house. I’m sharing this to show a pathway to success in academia even if you 1) graduated with debt &
@NIH_LRP 2) don’t have a privileged socioeconomic background. I want more people to benefit from this program! You forgo *years* of $$$ in grad school+postdoc and unless you can rely on sig. intergenerational wealth transfer, you must find a way to make up for it.
