Vowel & consonant duration vary inversely in Australian #Yolngu language Djambarrpuyŋu, so what’s contrastive? A pair of production & perception studies show that V length is contrastive, though both V & C duration influence perception #LabPhon#openaccess https://t.co/UgZiXuASLB
When you're done with that, as a treat, you can also check out the paper that she and I did for SST on vowel duration patterns in contexts where length is *not* contrastive

Check out Katie Jepson's cool new LabPhon paper which teases apart the influence of vowel and consonant duration on the perception & production of phonological vowel length!

@Golden_Shackles Wonderful tool. Although this stuff is all done in R (think of the name as a tribute to Praat) -- it's a relatively simple way to make this kind of figure in a more general-purpose coding environment
There are also signal-specific arguments for making just the pitch, or formant contour, or whatever stand out. This is also implemented in the Shiny app. Have fun plotting! (3/3)
The main new thing is the 'highlight' argument for making portions of signals stand out with a different color, point size, or similar. This can be done by specifying exact times or by matching labels in a TextGrid (2/3)
In non-grant-related news, I've packaged up some tools for working with REAPER in R. (For the uninitiated, REAPER is a very nice pitch tracking tool made by David Talkin which works particularly well for non-modal speech) https://t.co/QCTkO5T2Ud
REAPER is a command line tool that outputs raw text, which can be a hurdle for installing & using if you're not used to that sort of thing. The R library helps with installing & calling REAPER, importing the output to R, and converting REAPER output to a Praat-readable format
I've received funding from @Carlsbergfondet for the Category-shifting Change in Real Time Project, where I'll track small incremental sound changes with major linguistic consequences in a large longitudinal corpus! I'm very excited and grateful to be able to pursue this!
