2024 theme: Energizing Communities to Power the #Bioeconomy #Workforce

While there is significant overlap between #datascience and bioinformatics, they are not the same. Most importantly from the perspective of education, attention paid to improving data science education nearly exclusively engages computer science, math, and statistics departments. This leaves most biology educators excluded.

The partition between data science and bioinformatics education persists across lifelong learning where biologists might only tangentially benefit from data science training. To be effective, efforts to improve bioinformatics education require direct attention. The proposed event—Global Bioinformatics Education Summit (GBES)—will directly address bioinformatics education challenges and opportunities.

New this year will be a policy forum where we invite all life science and biomedical funders, industry players that rely on bioinformatics expertise, and policymakers to sit at the same table, hear from expert educators and practitioners, learn from successful global strategies, and develop a new coherent call to action.
