Fountain, a readymade sculpture created by Marcel Duchamp in 1917, is comprised of a standard porcelain urinal bearing the signature "R. Mutt."

In April of the same year, Duchamp chose an unremarkable piece of plumbing and submitted it to the Society of Independent Artists' exhibition, the Society's first event, held at the Grand Central Palace in New York.

Duchamp elucidated the concept behind his readymade sculpture, describing it as a common object elevated to the status of artwork through the artist's decision to select it.

In his display, the urinal's typical orientation was changed. Although the committee did not dismiss Fountain, as the Society's rules required the acceptance of all pieces if the artists paid the fee, the piece was conspicuously absent from the exhibition area.
