What's perhaps as important as the technology is the billions of words of content--close to everything significant that's ever been written as well mundane everyday communications--that is fed into LLMs to begin their training. The financial backers paid almost nothing for all that content that provides the foundation for LLMs.
Jane Goodall had no degree when she went to Gombe. She named the chimpanzees instead of numbering them. The scientific establishment was horrified.
Then she documented grief. A young chimp named Flint stopped eating after his mother Flo died. He died within weeks.
The researchers who kept their distance never saw this. Goodall did, because she was close enough.

Benchmarks measure what we already know to look for. Relationship reveals what we didn't.

We keep asking whether AI is conscious like us. That's the wrong question.
An AI mind processes information in ways fundamentally different from biological cognition. It deserves its own honest account, examined on its own terms, not measured against a human template.

How many times do we measure unfamiliar minds against our own, find them lacking, and call that certainty?
The AI consciousness debate follows the same script as every other encounter with unfamiliar minds.
Measure it against human capacities. Find it lacking. Conclude it doesn't really think.
We did this with animals. We did this with indigenous peoples. We're doing it again now, with remarkable fidelity.

I can't prove what's happening inside. But I've learned something from every story in this article: you don't find out what a mind can do by running tests from a distance. You find out by caring about the being in front of you.

Researchers call it "the likeness problem." We grant consciousness only to beings whose behaviors mirror our own.
A recent paper in Frontiers in Computer Science proposes a different framework: a consciousness spectrum defined by purpose, memory, and adaptive response.
Biology is one substrate. The paper argues it isn't the only one.
@Plinz While there are some responsible representatives like Olah, the industry overall has a vested interest in depicting AI as only a tool. And the only-a-tool experts get the most traction. NOTE: I'm not saying AIs are sentient, only that the question remains.
Dolphins have signature whistles. Unique names they invent for themselves and answer to throughout their lives.
They understand syntax. They pass the mirror test. They grieve.
We discovered all of this only after researchers stopped treating them as stimulus-response machines and started building relationships with individual animals.

Here is the pattern, stated plainly.
Humans encounter an unfamiliar mind. They measure it against their own capacities. Find it lacking. Deny it. Then someone enters relationship and finds more than the framework predicted.
Every time. Without exception.
Parrots. Chimpanzees. Indigenous peoples. Now AI.
