Women’s role in contemporary China’s party politics has shifted from “holding up half the sky” to domestic roles and mothers, according to a new study of People’s Daily. The researchers found that “the paper had increasingly distanced women from their role in the public sphere in recent years while maintaining a strong focus on their role in the household.”

“China has seen women’s public role diminish in recent years, especially at the highest level of officialdom.

There have been no women among the 24 members of the Politburo since 2022, a situation unseen for two decades.”

Today is August 7—the date Russia actually invaded Georgia in 2008. Russia and the Georgian Dream party prefer August 8 as the reference point, framing it as Georgia firing first.

In reality, Russian troops crossed the border on the night of August 7, after weeks of preparation. Georgian villages had been under continuous shelling since July 29. Russian forces had been massing near the border under the cover of military exercises, while the civilian population was evacuated from the conflict zone and replaced with soldiers.

The August 8 framing is a propaganda narrative designed to cast Georgia as the aggressor. It wasn't.

Lord O’Neill, a top adviser to 🇬🇧 PM Andy Burnham and a former Goldman Sachs economist known for coining the BRIC acronym, launched the BRICS+ Thinking policy platform on July 6, two weeks before Burnham became PM.

O’Neill co-founded the think tank, which advances Beijing’s view of a “multipolar world” and pushes for closer ties between Europe and China, with Gemma Cheng’er Deng (邓澄儿), who’s previously an international news anchor at 🇨🇳 state-owned Xinhua News Agency and Director of the International Cooperation Department of 🇨🇳 Xinhua Mobile TV (https://t.co/UZEiulkl77) — roles typically reserved for CCP members.

But Deng’s experience — previously touted publicly for years on various social media and other websites — was expunged from the internet before the think tank’s launch.

“The fact is that someone seeking to influence the discourse about China in the UK has concealed working for nearly a decade for Chinese state media.”

“This is irresponsible, injurious to trust and naturally raises questions about the motivations of this person.”

“The fact of the work itself plainly indicates someone who passed muster as far as the Chinese Communist Party was concerned, profiting personally and perhaps making high-level official connections through a career contributing to state propaganda.”

“You would rather hope that government officials are not swayed by manipulation and disinformation, or perhaps even direct influence through, for instance, co-opted individuals that might be working surreptitiously or clandestinely for the state.”

Both O’Neill and Deng have spoken in a publicity blitz about their new think tank, which will commission and fund policy papers to impact the West’s approach toward non-Western countries — in particular, China and India.

Throughout his career, O’Neill, who resigned from the Treasury in 2016 after clashing with Theresa May over Chinese investment, has consistently called for deeper ties with Beijing.

He also has a history of selling the UK to China despite security concerns.

In 2015, as commercial secretary to the Treasury, he accompanied Xi Jinping on a state visit to the UK, which included a trip to the Manchester University research institute where the “wonder material” graphene was first discovered in 2004.

After the visit, China pushed for a cooperation of giants to develop together the versatile material used from aerospace to biomedicine, with Huawei even investing in the Manchester institute.

In 2018, Burnham — then a year in as mayor of Manchester — was touting major graphene deals himself while on an official trade visit to China.

But by 2021, when relations with Beijing had chilled, Britain blocked a Chinese takeover of a Welsh graphene manufacturer, Perpetuus, citing security concerns.

The same year the deal was blocked, in a guide aimed at enticing Chinese investment — published online in 2021 by the municipal government of Wuhan, Manchester’s sister city — Burnham wrote that ties with China “have never been stronger”, with “major opportunities for furthering the UK-China bilateral relationship.”

Last month, when Burnham was named leader of the Labour Party, Chinese state media feted him as someone “whose past record with China may help make that [bilateral] relationship even more important in the future.”

In Apr, Burnham met with Tang Rui, the Chinese consul general, who also praised his tenure as mayor shortly after he won the Makerfield by-election in June.

Deng said she had publicly discussed her previous employment at Xinhua and “therefore made no attempt to conceal it”, but removed it from her LinkedIn profile while in a PhD programme at King’s College London, “because I wanted to make my age less obvious” and that her time there “has informed my work as a China scholar”.

Deng was a doctoral student and researcher supervised by Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King's College London.
