Deeply concerned by the arrest of 24-year-old Tamil hip hop artist Sangeethsan Ganeskumar (known as Hiphop Sangee) in Sri Lanka under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). Criminalizing an artist for expressing his identity and sharing music is a flagrant violation of free speech.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental pillar of any democracy. Yet, consecutive Sri Lankan governments have repeatedly promised the international community they would repeal the PTA, only to break those promises and continue weaponizing it to silence dissent.
Since the height of the Tamil genocide in 2009, Tamils still live under intense military surveillance and systemic oppression. Acts like this are a painful reminder of why projects like the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton are so vital. It is essential for community healing, remembrance, and raising global awareness about the ongoing plight of Tamils.
I call for the immediate release of Sangeethsan Ganeskumar and join global human rights organizations in demanding the total abolishment of the PTA. @ncctonline@AnitaAnandMP@gary_srp@TheThanigasalam@LoganKanapathi@NeethanShan

Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism — especially hate-motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities. People across the region have the right to feel safe in public spaces. We thank our Hate Crime Unit for acting swiftly to locate and hold those responsible accountable.
Ontario is stronger because of leaders like @PrabSarkaria the first turban wearing Sikh to hold a cabinet post in the province. He works hard for all Ontarians and embodies how diversity makes Canada better. Hate has no place here. His records speaks itself.#onpoli
In Ontario, the Transportation Minister is Punjabi, the license issuers are Punjabi, the immigration firms bringing Punjabi drivers to Canada are Punjabi, and the trucking firms are Punjabi. The result: death, destruction, and transnational narcotics smuggling.
Foreign drivers endanger not only Canadian lives but American lives as well.
As the MPP for Scarborough–Rouge Park, home to the largest Tamil community in Canada, I echo the call for truth and accountability.
The visit to the Chemmani mass grave site is a stark reminder of the urgent need for an impartial, international investigation into the mass atrocities committed during the #TamilGenocide
As a Tamil Canadian, I’m deeply disturbed by the framing of this article. It subtly implies that Minister Anandasangaree’s Tamil identity and past human rights work make him unfit to oversee national security — that’s not scrutiny, that’s coded racism.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has stepped back from some national security decisions to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. https://t.co/nV5Dt5CSMH
We should be proud when leaders with lived experience stand for justice, not question their loyalty. Let’s call this what it is: a dangerous double standard. This is what we face every day in our workplace and now it's been shown to the Minister.
We unveiled the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton — a powerful symbol that has been constructed by the National Council of Canadian Tamils (@ncctonline) in remembrance of the victims of the Tamil Genocide being committed by the Sri Lankan state. This monument serves as a place for Canadians to come together to commemorate and memorialize the Tamil Genocide. It also allows the Tamil people to share their painful traumatic experiences and to educate others about the Tamil Genocide. Despite various attempts of Tamil Genocide denial and distortion, foreign interference and attempts to silence us by the Sri Lankan state, we stood firm. In Brampton and across Canada, we stand with the Tamil people.
The only Canadian retaliation measure that has caught American attention is Doug Ford saying he is willing to cut electricity off.
Ford was on CNN this morning, NBC last night.
American conservatives are noticing this and commenting.

Poorly installed bike lanes have only worsened Toronto’s record-breaking gridlock, making us the worst city for traffic in North America.
It’s time to take action - that’s why we are removing Bloor, University and Yonge Street bike lanes.

The 1.2 per cent of people who commute by bike shouldn’t be clogging primary roads for the over 70 per cent of people who drive. It’s just common sense.
