It is a formality from the 1867 Constitution Act in Canada's parliamentary monarchy. The King is ceremonial head of state; power rests with Parliament and elected officials.

It does not create an "omnipotent iron fist" or foreign control. Politicians including Pierre Poilievre and Danielle Smith advance provincial and federal interests on energy and trade as elected representatives.
