It is important to reward the right behavior – what you want to see repeated. For example, it is not the number of hours that someone works on something that is noteworthy, it is what they achieve. Recognize effort, reward results. #mentoring#MENTORING#LeadershipMatters#LEAD

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said,”A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - remember great action can start with a simple, humble beginning. So take that first step and don’t look back. #mentor#mentoring#mentoringwomen#lead#leadership#leadingpeople
Ever work for someone more concerned with the trappings of leadership instead of actually doing their leadership job? They put form over function, focusing on titles, rank, position, appearances, superficiality, perks etc. but not what really matters. Don’t be that person.
Discuss with your mentee the importance of a leader being approachable. People can feel intimidated by the Boss- their position, rank, years of experience, ability to influence others, etc. Great leaders set the tone of approachability through their daily interactions.
Sometimes small changes in the organization’s workforce can have a big impact, both positive and negative. Changes in personnel are particularly impactful when they provide an opportunity for internal promotion-good for the company, for the person and for organizational morale.
Words used by great leaders:
-Great idea, let’s try that
-I appreciate your hard work
-I like how you are thinking and….
-I trust you
-Thank you for taking care of your teammates
-You don’t seem yourself today, anything I can do?
-Let’s figure out why that didn't work
It’s important to discuss with your mentee their choices of words. Words matter and people will remember them long after you have forgotten the conversation or context of it. Say what you need to say and stand behind it. #mentoring#mentor#leaderhship
Empathy (noun) - the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. The best leaders I’ve worked with are empathetic. Talk to your mentee about how important that is to walk in another person’s shoes and try to see the world through their eyes. #mentoring#Lead
Discuss with your mentee the importance of not tying your idea or position to your ego or to you personally. By that I mean many folks take it personally or become offended if their idea is not accepted or others in the group poke holes in it. #mentor#mentoring#leadership#lead
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” — Albert Einstein Great leaders know people are not all the same. It is not a “one size fits all” in helping them find their inspiration.
You and your mentee should have agreed upon measurement criteria regarding goal achievement. Criteria should be specific and could take place over time (i.e., developing a long-term skillset versus a goal of completing a technical certification program). #mentor#goals#leader
“Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.” — Albert Schweitzer Discuss with your mentee the importance of leading by example. Our actions are more important than our words. #mentor#mentorship#leadership#leadbyexample
Sometimes you say something and it comes out all wrong or not the way you intended it to sound (foot in mouth disease, the story of my life). When that happens address the miscommunication immediately and correct it if you are aware of it. #mentor#mentoringwomen#communicate
Sometimes things can be and often are simple, so talk to your mentee about not overcomplicating problems or making something a crisis that isn’t. Keep things in perspective and help others around you do the same. #mentor#mentorship#leadership#lead#mentoringwomen#Leaders
Talk to your mentee about how to demonstrate respect for subordinates, peers and the Boss. It doesn’t take much to consciously show small signs of respect for those you work with and for. One way is by being on time. #mentor#leadership#mentoring#lead#mentoringwomen#respect
Discuss with your mentee small ways they can make big connections with their subordinates and peers. It may be something as simple as walking by their desk (or virtually connecting) to recognize a job well done. #mentor#mentorship#lead#connect#mentors
Teach your mentee to look outside their sphere of influence to the broad strategic implications of actions they have taken or could take. It is important to lift their gaze from a downward looking view into the organization to one that scans down, up, and across. #mentor#lead
