There's another shift worth watching: personalization.

Tether just added another 14 tonnes of gold in Q2 2026.

Its total gold holdings have now reached a record 146 tonnes, worth roughly $18.8B.

That reportedly makes Tether the largest known private holder of physical gold outside central banks and governments.

And this isn’t a one-off purchase.

Between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026, Tether had already accumulated another 53 tonnes.

In H1 2026, only four central banks bought more gold than Tether: Poland, Uzbekistan, China, and Kazakhstan.

Tether is now operating at a scale that rivals official-sector gold demand.

So, is Tether becoming a digital-era central bank, or is it simply diversifying its stablecoin reserves?

The distinction matters.

USDT is backed by a diversified reserve portfolio, with U.S. Treasuries making up the majority. Gold is one component of those reserves.
