One of the biggest, YES. Not necessarily the biggest.
In the end, the individual playing the game is responsible for deciding how far whatever opportunity they come across takes them.
I am still a big fan of starting your career at big corporations, but if one is unable to, the chances of winning super BIG in today's world regardless of starting point are simply endless!
When I started, I gave my best shot to get into one of the Big 4, believing that was the only way to achieve the best in this accountancy field, but to no avail; in the end, I am still proving myself wrong every blessed day.
Obviously, Big 4 experience is simply a standard across the globe to the point that people unknowingly accredit working with the Big 4 as part of my background anytime they are wowed by my technical capabilities—they just say, "we know you are a Big 4 trained professional." I don't even bother arguing it; I just go with the flow and take it as a compliment.
I remember when we started, and I was working with "& Co."; a friend of mine working at a Big 4 firm at the time was always respectful of my diverse experience and knowledge across the different subsets of accountancy practices I had been engaged in, while he was only doing PPE audits at the Big 4 that year. There were (and still are) many like him who always give that credit and sometimes count me lucky for starting where and when I started, even though it wasn't the Big 4.
Meanwhile, I know there are arguments of how I can't be a yardstick for some of these comparisons, but again, the game is the game, anyone who cares to win excellently, with or without Big 4, and ready to give it their best would surely do.
This is just to tell every young man out there who probably would have loved to work in any large corporation or 4 firm but hasn't yet, that all they need to do is keep grinding, and sooner or later, the experience gained here and there will surely pay off more than one can ever imagine.
Cheers.
