The first six volumes of the HxH en translation are so weird bc while Lillian Olsen has always been translating, “english adaptation” is credited to someone else there and that guy went wild on phrasing, emphases, and also just made shit up. These two infuriate me in particular
Approaches to manga translation have shifted a ton since HxH began and it’s kinda fun to see that change over the course of one work too, even if the early volumes hurt a little (and I have my jp volumes so ultimately for me it doesn’t matter that much asdfhjsj)
But there’s also some ??? choices past that point. A while ago I stumbled upon this part in Yorknew where a whole monologue gets invented when all Kurapika does is curse?? Which is WAY more impactful in context

To be clear, I think Lillian Olsen is a great translator who is really good at capturing the essence of what’s being said and having dialogue flow naturally in her target language. I only disagree with her choices sometimes, which might’ve also come from an editor
@HammySisko I love how when Togashi shared the vibe of the possible endings he's considering, he also said how ideally it's none of them and the actual ending will come to him when he's there. I just know we won't be expecting it either way, if we get there
Sometimes I try to imagine HxH getting the classic shonen ending where every mc gets their inoffensive opposite sex spouse and it's not too hard for Gon or Leorio, Kurapika is... possible limited by circumstances but Killua. No way. That's a baby gay through and through
@HammySisko Well, Obviously, but if I had to imagine lol
And yeah, it's incredible how Togashi has managed to really embody the journey theme structurally in HxH, an ending will just be the point where we stop following the lives of these people, making it not even need an ending at all
