New data released by @StatCan_eng reveals that 22.9% of Canadians experienced #FoodInsecurity in 2022 — an increase of nearly 1.8 million people from the year prior: https://t.co/PTgTjd76VH
Thrilled to moderate a panel of very smart folks talking about poverty, food insecurity, and material deprivation in Canada. Spoiler: poverty reduction is not enough - we need a strong web of social services that support people above the poverty line too #feedopportunity2023
"Different people are often differently identified as being food insecure vs. poor. Both poverty and food insecurity are higher among indigenous groups and racialized groups in Canada," explained Andrew Heisz, Director, Centre for Income and Socioeconomic Well-being Statistics.
"Growing up, we always had a freezer full of fish and frozen meats that were caught – I thought this was normal. I didn’t know these were essential for my family”, said Tasha Monkman from the Northern Manitoba Food, Culture & Community Collaborative.
Today is our 4th annual Food Security Symposium! We're thrilled to bring together experts, knowledge seekers, and practitioners representing all sectors to discuss how we can collectively address the #FoodInsecurity crisis in Canada. Follow along as we share key insights today!

“We can’t continue to rely on food charity in order to make up for policy failures at different levels of government,” Neil Hetherington, CEO of #DailyBreadTO, tells @CP24. The #WhosHungry2023 report illustrates that change is needed now to #endhunger ⬇️ https://t.co/Sk7E5ucB9y
1 in 10 Torontonians now needing food banks, with triple-digit increases in new users from 2022 to 2023. Thanks to @DailyBreadTO @tebrons for this important data and for the multi-level policy recommendations that go along with it. #foodinsecurity

If Toronto had ranked ballots I’d go
1. Matlow
2. Chow
3. probably Hunter
But we don’t! And so I’m gonna vote Chow. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good and split the progressive vote :)
@cityofbarrie this is decision will have dire implications for people without homes. Compassionate, human-centred approaches are what’s needed. Centre people in your policy decisions.
The proposed bylaw in Barrie seeks to prevent anyone from providing basic necessities like food and water or any help to people surviving homelessness. It is inhumane public policy.
Barrie City Council needs to reject this anti-health amendment and put people/housing first.
Super thought provoking thread and an great example why all sectors (esp. the private sector) need to be heavily involved in alleviating the housing crisis 👇🏻
We are consistently seeing food banks, researchers, & funders asking for the same thing: stronger policies that give people enough money in their pockets for food. With 1.1 million more food insecure people since 2021, there has never been a better time for government action.
Thanks to @TheAgenda for hosting a critical discussion with @proofcanada, @tebrons and Loblaws about the #FoodInsecurity crisis. We need to strengthen the social safety net so that no one needs to rely on charity to access food. Watch the segment here: https://t.co/RCzAi9Avvh
