Prime Minister Corporal Abiy Ahmed Ali, PhD, declared on television that Barentu, a town deep in Eritrea’s western lowlands, belongs to the Oromo. He skipped Amhara, Tigray and Afar and landed straight in Eritrea. This was meant to be a threat. “I can convince sixty million Oromos of anything, and I can march them to war.” He insults the Oromo far more than he threatens anyone else. Most of them already know how little he thinks of them. The rest of the world knows how little he thinks at all. As accentuated by its frantic PR & diplomatic campaigns in the past few weeks, the Potemkin Party's pretentions to, and quest for, "sovereign access to the sea as well as regional power projection" squarely rest on usurping and leveraging the endowments and resources of its neighbors.

Fallacious discourses, repeated ad nauseum, on "historical legitimacy...existential threats. etc."; audacious arguments on its "indispensable role in the security of the Red Sea maritime route", often accompanied by provocative saber rattling, are indeed the tell-tale signs and fatal symptoms of this malaise.

The facts are otherwise simple and straight forward.

Ethiopia has unfettered and wide latitude for using several ports in the Horn of Africa neighborhood for access to the sea on the basis of normative commercial agreements with all the transit countries.

In as far as the security of the Red Sea is concerned, this is a matter for, and within the legal purview of, all the littoral States.

"Case closed"; in legal parlance.

In many respects, the PP's mindset and elusive posturing is perplexing as Ethiopia indeed possesses enormous domestic resources and endowments that it can judiciously leverage for advancing its regional and international ties of cooperation instead of veering into elicit and uncharted waters to provoke unnecessary and avoidable conflicts with detrimental consequences to regional stability and healthy cooperation.

Unfortunately, the Potemkin Party's fatal infatuation remains coveting and usurping the endowments of its neighbours: "ብዘይ ኩታኻ ወለል፥ ብዘይ ጠስምኻ ጸረር"፡ እዩ'ቲ ነገሩ።

Potemkin Party zealots and minions continue to ramp up their wholesale, defamatory, media campaigns against Eritrea by peddling and recycling abject lies (Horn Review; IFA etc.), on its governance architecture and disparaging its economic policy approaches and realities.

Truth is, these incessant campaigns invariably stem from, and are principally pursued, in order to deflect attention from the chronic internal security quagmire that is afflicting the country as well as to camouflage & rationalize the grave threat to regional stability its misguided agenda of "sovereign access to the sea" has engendered.

Indeed, as the figures below illustrate, its economic predicaments remain extremely dire in spite of massive financial injections, and perennial "safety nets and bailouts" by its multilateral and bilateral donors. (Aggregate donor support to Ethiopia in the last three decades amounts to a whopping 84 billion US$).

The country is also seething under spiraling conflicts and centrifugal forces that stem from deep-rooted governance deficits that the PP has exacerbated.

These are, indeed, the poignant realities that the Potemkin Party should grapple with instead of stoking internal and regional conflicts in pursuit of its costly and elusive pipe-dreams.
