I think cautious optimism is the default setting for those with a software or engineering bent. Once you dive in though it's hard to see any benefits that don't have massive externalities.
I used to be skeptically optimistic too. For years I preached against conflating crypto with blockchain, and not to throw the baby out with the bath water. But recently, I abandoned the bothsidesism, b/c the systemic risk and investor threat of Web3 have evolved beyond the pale.
Self custody /decentralization is a recipe for disaster for the average person. You're swimming in a sea with highly sophisticated individuals always looking to exploit.
@crypto888crypto Hello beanie, my old friend
Youve come to rug me once again
Because a cash grab softly creeping
Being planned while I was sleeping
And the FOMO that was planted in my brain
Does not remain
With the sound of 11.11 ETH

The cryptography that is in 'crypto' is merely enough to serve as a foundation myth of mathematical purity and incorruptibility. It is a blinding lustered talisman used as privatized statecraft to support empires of scams. It is not actually good cryptography. A small thread.
