I just got a phone call from the "Board of Dentistry"
They said there was illegal activity on my license. They recited my license number, NPI number, office name, current residential addresses, and case number.
After asking what the unlawful activity was, they insisted we transfer to a secure line. They called me on a different phone, and began reading me something that sounded like Miranda rights. Informed me the FBI was listening, and that I was not to discuss the details of this case with anyone.
They then told me that I have been found to be smuggling drugs.
My first thought was that they saw my name on some documents at the border through biΓΆm and had some questions.
Then he elaborated that it was 3 days ago, and a truckload full of Oxycodone over the Mexican border, along with some money laundering to the tune of millions of dollars.
Usual dentist fanfare.
They named my banking institutions, previous workplaces, as well as some other details that would pass an initial sniff test.
Then I started to realize this was a scam using caller ID spoofing.
He kept going on and on about my legal representation and I stopped him and said "How do I know you are not a scammer?"
He calmly offered to fax me my license suspension, which I provided the fax number...then he hung up.
Be very vigilant out there. The scams are getting more complex. I won't lie, I almost had to change my underwear before lunch.
(Also, this should be punished with the death penalty, but I'm not a politician)

I'm always asked about nicotine and oral health with the rise of non-tobacco nicotine delivery methods (Zyn, ecigarettes).
A new systematic review came out showing that most nicotine products cause peri-implantitis which is inflammation and tissue destruction around dental implants.
This is not meant to be a sweeping statement as the study is limited to implants. However, it further supports the claim that nicotine itself causes oxidative stress to the surrounding tissue.
This can lead to worsened outcomes like bleeding gums, loss of bone height, inflammatory markers, and pocket depths.
