in the same country, a man gets arrested for complaining about bread prices in a street interview. an elected mayor sits in silivri facing 2,300 years of charges.

dear Americans, yesterday Erdoğan walked into your United Nations and told the world that international institutions have been "rendered unable to fulfil their mission" by those in power.

let that sit for a moment.

this is the man who just seized 1,326 companies and $32 billion in assets from his own citizens. whose most popular political rival has been in a prison cell for 18 months facing 23 (!) centuries in charges. whose courts are jailing journalists for covering civil society. whose judges get replaced until they deliver the right verdict.

he stood in New York and lectured the planet about institutions being captured by the powerful.

he was describing himself.

Erdoğan does not go to the United Nations to convince anyone that he cares about justice.

he goes because it is the only stage left on earth where he can still perform the role.

the world may be bigger than five.

but modern Turkey is governed by the fear of one.
