FACT CHECK: Former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, recently claimed that Peter Obi could not control the Bakassi Boys and that Anambra became safer only after Governor Willie Obiano took over.
But what do the records show?
First, the Bakassi Boys did not originate under Peter Obi. The Bakassi Boys emerged around 1999–2000 and became prominent during earlier administrations in the South-East, years before Peter Obi became Governor of Anambra in 2006. Historical records show that the group was already active long before Obi entered office.
Second, the claim that Anambra was unsafe under Peter Obi contradicts official statements made by the Nigeria Police Force at the time. In April 2014, then Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar publicly declared that Anambra had remained the safest state in Nigeria during the previous five years. He specifically noted that there had been no bank robbery in the state during that period and praised the cooperation between Peter Obi's administration and security agencies.
Third, even Governor Willie Obiano, who succeeded Peter Obi in 2014, inherited a state that security agencies had already ranked among the safest in the country. While Obiano later restructured and formalized the vigilante architecture into the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), the security foundation did not start with him.
Beyond security, Peter Obi's administration was widely recognized for prudent financial management, educational investments, healthcare improvements, and infrastructure planning. He was named Nigeria's Most Prudent Governor by ThisDay and received recognition from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for performance in healthcare and immunization.
This does not mean Peter Obi was a perfect governor. No governor is. But if we are going to debate his record, let us do so with facts, not political talking points.
This job wey NDC give Theo go really hard am. 😂
Oshiomole claimed that insecurity under Peter Obi was high in Anambra because of the presence of Bakassi boys.
As the media communicator of the NDC, Theo was expected to debunk the propaganda and sell Peter Obi's track records in security.
Instead, the guy started going round, speaking grammar and beating around the bush with sprinkles of NDC.
As the guy failed to make the defense, Obidients rolled up their sleeves and immediately thrashed the propaganda by themselves.
I'm just finding out now that the Bakassi ended in 2002, under Mbadinuju's tenure. And after Peter Obi's crackdown on criminality, the Nigeria Police declared Anambra the safest state in Nigeria.
Obidients no dey gree ooo
Dear beloved sports-loving Nigerian youths,
After watching the performances of Davido, Burna Boy, and Rema at the opening of the 2026 World Cup—at a time when Nigeria, the giant of Africa, is absent—I felt a measure of consolation. This was reinforced by the fact that many Nigerians playing for clubs worldwide are representing other countries. Felix Nmecha, for instance, set a record by scoring the fastest goal at six minutes for Germany. I write to you therefore, knowing that this country belongs to you, the youth.
You are more of stakeholders in Nigeria’s future than I am. I am 64 years old; by God’s grace, much of my journey is behind me, while yours lies ahead.
It is therefore imperative that you rise to the challenge by obtaining your PVC, your most powerful tool for driving the change you desire.
In the last three years alone, over 15 million Nigerians have turned 18—enough to decide who becomes President, Governor, Senator, Member of the House, or Local Government Chairman. Indeed, enough to shape the nation’s future.
I know many of you are sceptical about politics and political parties. I understand why, but scepticism must not become surrender.
You do not need to belong to any party or wait for anyone to organise you. Organise yourselves in your streets, campuses, communities, workplaces, churches, mosques, and social groups. Mobilise, debate, demand accountability, and take part in choosing those you wish to entrust with leadership.
If you are organised and wish to hear directly from me, invite me. I will come and share my plans for you and our nation.
Do not sit on the sidelines while others decide your future.
I appeal to you to register and vote. Your vote can shape who becomes the next President of our country.
My young friends, this is your country. Take it back.
A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
Growing up, I believed elders were naturally wiser, more honest, and more responsible.
What I’m seeing in Nigeria today has taught me that age and wisdom are not the same thing.
Character, integrity, and competence do not come with grey hair. They come from values.
@MagnetAfri1897@firstladyship If this were a normal country, terrorists who feature regularly on TikTok and transfer money from accounts would have long been arrested including their linked sponsors.
A student who gets F9 cannot destroy a nation.
A leader without character can.
Maybe we’ve been measuring the wrong thing all along.
Education is not IQ alone.
Character is the real certificate.
Why should the President appoint the INEC Chairman?
This is fundamentally wrong.
It makes the Commission dependent on the very person they’re supposed to hold accountable and makes credible elections impossible.
The President should NOT be appointing the INEC Chairman.
As long as INEC depends on the President, credible elections in Nigeria are a fantasy.
