Founders: write a business plan. Even though it will be wrong.
This paper shows the act of planning helps surface potential issues and makes a difference in the long-term. A formal business plan raises the odds of startup success by 10-15%, even controlling for everything else.

@DomLedinger@MushtaqBilalPhD Same here, great tool, but I had a similar issue that if choossing "similar papers", it would never give me papers that are more recent than the ones in the database and only older ones. @RsrchRabbit
Two new @GlobalHealthBMJ editorials — inviting us to be more thoughtful about the labels we place on countries/people:
1. The use, misuse & overuse of the ‘LMIC’ category https://t.co/n8bAJ7l2Er
2. How we classify countries & people — and why it matters https://t.co/EqR05IRMni
"Most of what you hear about entrepreneurship is all wrong. It’s not magic; it’s not mysterious; and it has nothing to do with genes. It’s a discipline and, like any discipline, it can be learned.” Peter F. Drucker

This week 43 of the good and the great from the VC world have launched a new mentoring programme for female founders.
But... IS that what is needed?
Brilliant piece from @TessaLFClarke here arguing that it's not: https://t.co/8C3tML8jLm
To revitalize impoverished places through entrepreneurship, we shoud focus on "scale deep" instead of "scale up" - "that is, to grow slowly and become strongly embedded into the local economy, rather than growing as quickly and broadly as possible."
HBR Research has shown that entrepreneurship training for underprivileged founders has little impact on firm profitability. Read more here:

This study of 1200+ unicorn founders is so revealing
1) PhDs are far more likely to create unicorns than college dropouts despite the romance associated with dropouts.
2) Folks with just the Bachelors are the biggest chunk.
3) MBAs are about 20%. Surprised!!
The stories we tell about ourselves hold a lot of power. What we like, what we don’t like, what we’ve lost, what changed everything, who we are. But often, we fit the events of our lives into those stories, rather than change those stories to fit new events.

Congratulations to all the #TEF-beneficiaries! Interesting fact that the grants-receiver are 68% female, compared to only 37% female applicants.

On NGOs and NPOs, so true unfortunately:
"A lot of these groups are not interested in solving the problem, they are interested in exploiting the problem. [...] It is a business. It is a feel-good business. (@CaptPaulWatson in @seaspiracy)

More than a knowledge-based economy #Botswana needs an efficiency-driven economy, government and society. No great plan can go far if people have to stand in queues from 4 am, submit countless certified copies of the same paper and make repeated follow-ups on every single matter.
"I think that's the essence of entrepreneurship. You start out with an idea and in the end your company value proposition looks really different to what you thought at the beginning, because you learned, you adapted"
