The Court of the Second Judicial Circuit, Fines Division, is now in session, the Honorable Judge Keith Gerard Mallinson Wood presiding.
Quite a lot going on here. #ThrowbackThursday
Delighted to be able to follow up with some good news re: my tweet from last week about accessible parking problems at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Both @RichmondOval and @Concord_Parking have been in touch about some of the concrete ways that they are addressing the issue.
@SaintsBC@top_employers https://t.co/sHEBPzUIRI perhaps with such a renowned reputation @SaintsBC can take it upon themselves to not only educate their students, but the parents as well. What a disappointing representation from the parent in the attached tweet. #beaware#FYI
I took a picture of Karen's license plate. She asked if I also wanted a picture of her face, so I replied "do you want me to take a picture of your face?" She said yes, so I obliged.

[Video description: a white hockey mom in a silver car waits for her child in an accessible parking space. I inform her repeatedly that she cannot park there. She insists that she is not parked but merely stopping because her car is in drive.]
After she rolled up her window, I told her child "pls inform your mother that she cannot park here". She rolled down her window to reply "he doesn't need to. I heard you. There's nothing wrong with my hearing."
Doubling down on the contempt for disabled ppl. What a winner. π
Hey @RichmondOval the accessible parking situation continues to be a mess. Please address this issue.
I have a photo of this person's license plate that I would like to share with the Concord Parking folks.
For anyone who doesn't understand the problem: parking is not accessible if your ability to park depends upon a nondisabled person vacating the space.
Literally the rest of the garage is available to nondisabled people. π
As I was leaving, another mom was also using an accessible space as a loading zone. I told her not to. At first she was defensive but then she stopped, apologized, and asked for more information. We talked about why accessible spaces need to be kept open. Be more like mom #2 pls.
@RichmondOval pls ensure parents have/use a safe, well-lit loading zone and stop using accessible spaces as such. Disabled athletes shouldn't be sacrificing rights and access -- and we really shouldn't have to be the ones having these conversations. These encounters are unsafe!!!
@Concord_Parking the accessible parking situation at the @RichmondOval is a mess. There are consistently one to three cars w/o accessible parking permits using accessible spaces every time I'm there. It needs to be addressed. It is not safe for disabled ppl.
We're forced to deal w/aggressive, entitled parents or to park elsewhere and risk not being able to enter/exit the vehicle (safely or at all). The Oval staff tell me it's @Concord_Parking's responsibility so pls do something about it. Accessible spaces are not loading zones.
A nondisabled person's desire for greater convenience does NOT outweigh the extraordinarily basic issue of access -- that means access w/o having to ask for it, w/o risking a confrontation, & w/o the reminder that many ppl see you as subhuman and view your needs as discretionary.
The thing that baffles me is how many nondisabled ppl don't perceive the ableism. They think that it's enough to vacate the spot if a disabled person shows up. They think that's them being magnanimous! Imagine possessing that level of entitlement, ignorance, and casual contempt.
