Happy Birthday to @ChangeTheRef's @manueloliver00.
Manny has fought tirelessly for common-sense gun laws since his son Joaquin, was killed in the Parkland mass shooting.
We wish him a happy birthday and continue to stand by his side in the fight to #EndGunViolence. 🧡

Myth 6: Police stops lead to dangerous weapons off the street.
Reality: MPD Data (That only was released after @ACLU_DC sued them under the NEAR Act) shows that only 0.8% of all police stops led to the seizure of any weapon and only 0.6% to a firearm. https://t.co/IMlIVTFmDZ
Myth 4: MPD does not have enough police officers
Reality: Per 2018, DC had more police officers per capita than any other large U.S. city. Today there are still 471 Sworn Officers/100,000 people. Or ~1 sworn officer for every 200 people in DC. https://t.co/r7lP6P0SPy (Page 28)
Myth 2: DC has systemically defunded MPD.
Reality: Funding increased FY12-FY20. From FY20-22 there was a 13% decrease (adj for inflation). This is due to transferring the school security contract from MPD to DCPS & the rate of attrition, not "defunding"

After clearing a portion of the M Street encampment in NoMa (story from yesterday: https://t.co/LfU52cZGiL) D.C. has placed concrete jersey barriers to stop people from pitching tents again. Note that the sign says tents were cleared to create a “pedestrian passageway.”
Time is running out to urge Congress to pass show your support for @POTUS's #BuildBackBetterAct, which includes $5 billion in funding for community violence intervention programs.
