@lxeagle17 McCain instinctively and correctly recognised this as soon as the woman came out with "he's an Arab". His rebuttal went directly to the *underlying* point, by making clear that Obama was just a normal guy with whom McCain had a political disagreement.
@lxeagle17 Yes. All of the stuff that was being spread about Obama (secret Muslim/Arab/terrorist sympathiser/Antichrist) was about painting him as the Other. The precise charge was secondary (e.g. how many of these people understood that "Arab" doesn't mean "Muslim"?).
@metrotrains Care to tell people what has been happening on the Frankston line for the last 20 minutes? Trains crawling along and one stopped at Hawksburn, with no announcements of any kind.
@bpickar@daveweigel Not correct. The disposition of the case would have been 5-4, but Roe would have remained law. Roberts concurred only in the judgment: he argued for removing the viability line without overruling Roe and Casey.
@jeremy_gans@HighCourtofAus@austlii "The dispositions published since December 2023 are available below." There is a section headed 7 December 2023, which has not yet been populated. https://t.co/qvK1ZrnbUw
@jeremy_gans There are a number of other matters in which the Court has been unanimous in agreeing to make orders at the conclusion of a hearing: try searching for "unanimously of the view" (by my count, 18 since 2016).
@auspost Interesting to see my item being "processed at facility" 8 times since arriving in Melbourne on 30 November (including 6 times at the same facility). I may not ever receive the item, but it is comforting to know that it's being so attentively and rigorously processed.
@i_jayas @DannyDutch "Tenir" is another derivative of "tea/te" (the "nir" being a reference to water), so it is entirely consistent with the point of the infographic. The text in the graphic just highlights a dozen or so examples of the hundreds of derivatives/usages shown in coloured dots.
@jeremy_gans@juliakretz@ohhooboy Freya (55th for girls) was a more popular baby name in NSW last year than either John or Mary (both outside the top 100). https://t.co/uEeLuYZxQ4
@austlii @je2obrien Classic AustLII seems to be experiencing problems. The case database at least seems to have been running very slowly for the last day or more.
@jonkudelka It's like a Yes Minister script. Before election: "Labor has to promise to support stage 3 to avoid being 'wedged'!" After election: "Labor has to keep stage 3 to avoid being accused of breaking a promise!" Missing in both: any sense that Labor should have actual convictions.
The response whenever this government bleats about not having the money to maintain health initiatives or support the low-paid must be: Stage. 3. Tax. Cuts. #abc730
@h2twch@DavidLewis61 @Quadrivium13 @SCOTUSblog The syllabus forms no part of any opinion. It is clear from the opinion that neither Kagan nor Sotomayor joined Part II-C. That is unsurprising, because the constitutionality of the death penalty was not in issue in this case.
