Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy right now is announcing a federal interagency task force--DOJ, DHS, HSI--to investigate trucking fraud. The task force will investigate CDL schools (hundreds have been put out of business so far) and audit state licensing agencies for issuing CDLs to non English-speaking drivers.

Several states--California, Illinois, NY--are under investigation by federal transportation officials for issuing tens of thousands of "non domiciled" CDLs in recent years. This appears to represent an acceleration of those efforts nationwide.

King Harald V of Norway died this morning in Oslo. He was 89. He had been king since 1991. Europe’s oldest reigning monarch is gone. His son Haakon takes the throne.

Mourn the man. He was the first Norwegian-born prince in centuries. He married a commoner. He spent 35 years as the face of a small country that liked him. That part is human. It deserves respect.

The institution is another matter.

A living tourist stamp is one thing. A royal household funded like a medieval court is another. If the job is waving, ribbons, and photo ops, the bill should look like a museum, not a second government.

Harald himself called it an assignment. Fine. Assignments end. Nations do not need bloodlines to function. They need people who work.

Norway is its people. That was his best line. It is also the case against keeping kings on the public dime.
