Meet Omar Martinez
Omar Martinez is the senior running back and wide receiver for Desert Mirage High School. Standing at 5’11” and weighing 160 lbs, he’s a dynamic force on the field. As one of the team captains, Omar has led Desert Mirage with nearly 1,000 rushing yards in just seven games this season. With 977 yards and 16 touchdowns already under his belt, he’s on pace for a historic season.
What makes Omar’s performance even more impressive is that he only began playing football as a freshman. He credits his older brother for inspiring him to take up the sport and is quick to acknowledge the role his offensive line has played in his success—especially junior Carlos Garcia, who has been instrumental in leading the charge.
When asked about sharing the backfield with fellow senior running back Russell Wilkerson, Omar responded,
“I would say we are like a one-two punch when we’re in the game. In practice, it’s more competitive, which has helped us both get better. He’s also a big part of our defense—he’s an all-around ball hawk.”
Wilkerson has contributed 812 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns, and 48 tackles on defense this season.
During the offseason, Omar focused on taking care of his body and fulfilling his responsibilities. He showed up consistently to practice, enduring the intense Thermal heat.
“I would say this offseason was a big part of our success,” Omar said. “Our coaches put us through extreme daily practices to condition us for ‘Iron Man Football.’”
Despite his commitment to football and his responsibilities at home, Omar also excels academically. He maintains a 3.7 GPA and plans to pursue a career as a firefighter or in the automotive industry.
When asked what advice he has for younger players, Omar shared:
“Keep God first, keep working no matter how hard it gets, be a student of the game, and want it bad enough if you want to be great.”
Omar also expressed gratitude for those who’ve supported him:
“Most importantly, God keeps me strong. My family, teammates, and coaches—who are basically like family—push me every day to be better.”
He gave a special shoutout to his injured teammate, Devian Martinez:
“Devian would have helped us get more wins, but sadly got injured in his first game, where he rushed for 330 yards.”
Coach Felipe had high praise for Omar:
“Omar is every coach’s dream in terms of what you ask for in a player. I’ve never heard him complain once. He’s a quiet kid, but a natural leader. His teammates want to play hard for him, and that’s one of the reasons he’s had such huge success this season. The program is going to miss him—not just as a player, but as a person.”
It’s hard to imagine a better compliment. Omar Martinez is not only a standout athlete but also a humble leader who sees the bigger picture. He’s a great teammate, a dedicated student, and someone who clearly inspires those around him.
Good luck this season, Omar—we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.
