He spent six months in the gray dust looking for his boy. To me it was perverted black snow blanketing the city.
Deputy Chief James “Jim” Riches already knew, in that terrible way a father knows, that his oldest son was up there.
Firefighter Jimmy Riches Jr. had gone in with Engine 4. He was last seen carrying an injured woman from the lobby of the North Tower. The next day would have been Jimmy’s 30th birthday.
Jim went to the pile anyway. Every day. Through winter. Through the smoke that never really left. Looking for a crushed helmet with Ladder 114 on it. Looking for his son. Looking for everyone else’s sons.
In March 2002 they found him. Jim called his other three boys — Timothy, Danny, Thomas — and together they carried Jimmy out of the pit and laid him on a stretcher wrapped in the flag. “We got to bury him,” Jim wrote years later. Then he added the sentence that still breaks you: there is no closure until your son walks through the door again.
The dust that covered that search covered Jim too.
In 2005 his lungs shut down. Sixteen days in a coma. They told the family he had five hours. He fought his way back, learned to walk and talk again, and spent the rest of his life speaking for the men still dying from what they breathed that autumn.
He never stopped living 9/11. “I lost my son, Jimmy,” he said. “My best friend. My oldest boy.”
On Thanksgiving 2025, twenty-four years later, the same attack that took the son took the father.
Jim Riches was 74.
One of more than four hundred FDNY members now gone from the illnesses that followed the towers down — more than the 343 who fell on the day itself.
A street in Brooklyn is named Jimmy Riches Way. A family still gathers at the memorial every September and reads the names. A father and son who both ran toward the fire are finally together again.
Never forget the ones who died that morning. Never forget the ones the morning is STILL taking.
Rest now, Chief. Your boy was waiting.

Keeneland is a great place to go and bet but man when is enough , enough. The horrible misses on the morning lines are getting worse not better, and the CAW's are out of control with the late odds drops every race. At some point we got to address BOTH . It just has to happen. @keenelandracing
Jaxson Dart is at risk, now tied to a sinking ship, of being compromised by a #Giants regime that should have been ousted in January. This roster and situation around him is bad. And it’s going to get worse. My full thoughts on what needs to happen here, with an eye on protecting the rookie QB and not being satisfied with the pathetic status quo, in the @NYDailyNews https://t.co/yE64wP0aS9
Hey @CarlBanksGIII since your opinion is the only one that matters, and Giants fans are idiots and don’t know what they’re talking about…why don’t you tell us how we’re supposed to act with the news?
You pick this guy 3rd overall. He gets his hand on 1 punt, almost blocked 2 more. Get 1/2 sack and you only play him 54% of the snaps against a QB as athletic as Jayden Daniels?
Make it make sense!
The Rangers cannot by any stretch of the imagination extend Panarin, especially anything north of 8m AAV.
A stacked free agent class, the cap set to rise 10mil+, and 11.6mil falling off the books all happening at the same time is a gift.
Thanks for the memories ✌️

There’s a generation of #NYR fans that have never had a chance to listen to Sam & JD broadcast a game. I hope they are watching tonight. For some of us, Sam & JD were the voice of our childhood fandom. One last ride tonight. Enjoy it.

It can't be understated how awesome it is that the NHL replaced its all-star game with a format that the players love so much that they are willing to play through injuries that will require them to miss time when the regular season starts back up this weekend.
