@alfiekohn My two sons read on very different levels in elementary school. I’d simply tell teachers, in our home reading is for fun, research shows homework at that age is counterproductive so they won’t be doing any and I will opt them out of all standardized tests. Never had a problem.

@NicholsUprising@DrOz No one in PA says commonwealth, even though it technically is. We live in State College, home to Penn State and our kids went to State High. No "Commonwealth" anywhere. In Virginia, people did use the term, but never heard it here. It's like saying crudités instead of veggie tray
@politicususa Fetterman actually looks like western/central PA guys, guys who drive tractors or fix furnaces or work on road crews, and many of whom are still flying Trump flags. And even though PA is a commonwealth, no one here calls it that. That’s a Virginia thing.
@Jody537LN@skinhorse8@CharlotteAlter It’s a PA thing. From Yinz, which is second person plural (you’all or you guys) in western PA. So folks in Pittsburgh are Yinzers. In eastern PA, it’s youse.
@617_redhead@thornehealth Actually The research described had 1 group eat chocolate first thing in the morning, another right before bed, and third no chocolate at all. Both chocolate groups did better than the no chocolate. And best was the morning chocolate group. And the experiment used milk chocolate.
Outside Lviv station, which is thronging with exhausted refugees fleeing war in eastern Ukraine, an accomplished pianist is playing “What a Wonderful World.” It’s hauntingly beautiful.
I’ve just seen this and I know it’s already getting spread around a lot but I had to do my part to spread it more because it’s pretty damn perfect. Thank you, @StephenAtHome & @colbertlateshow for this!
Last night my mom, Dorothy Gurney, died after 85 years of fighting for social justice. She taught me how to run a political campaign, fight for a cause but also the importance of having a garden. Thanks Mom!
@TroyLaclaire @whatexitweb @danielsgoldman A parent is liable for a child's negligent acts if the parent knows or has reason to know that it is necessary to control the child and the parent fails to take reasonable actions to do so. This legal theory is known as negligent supervision.
