Children with Special Needs: A National Responsibility Carried by Self-Sacrificing Youth
This picture is not just a group photo; it is a picture of hope, compassion, and people who decided to change the lives of many children.
This center is a place where children with special needs are cared for. It is the only facility that consistently provides this kind of service to the central and southern regions of Somalia, home to more than ten million people. It is a home where hope shines, and a place where many children have found the opportunity to grow, rather than being lost to neglect, misunderstanding, or care that fails to meet their needs.
Every day, this center cares for more than 100 children with diverse needs — including autism, Down syndrome, speech delays, ADHD, and other developmental challenges. Each of these children has a unique story, a family holding onto hope, and a future that deserves to be protected.
What is even more remarkable is that this heavy responsibility is not led by a government institution or a well-funded project. It is carried on the shoulders of a group of young Somalis — men and women — who, with self-sacrifice, patience, knowledge, and conscience, chose to serve the most vulnerable in society. They believe that a person’s worth is not tied to their ability, but to the dignity given to them by God.
In truth, this is a responsibility that the government should have led, with society standing alongside it. Children with special needs are not simply asking for compassion; they have a right to education, care, health services, and equal opportunity to be visible within society.
It is saddening that many families still believe such children will “grow out of it” or treat them like other children without considering their specific needs. This delays their development and takes away the chance for them to reach their true potential.
Ask yourself: If your child were different from their siblings, and you treated them as if they had no special needs, what would happen? The answer is clear: worsening delays, depression, and lost potential — all of which could have been prevented had they been supported in time.
Advanced societies are measured by how they care for their most vulnerable people. Children with special needs are not a burden on society; they are a valuable part of it. When given proper care, they become people who contribute to their families and their country.
Therefore, this center and its dedicated staff deserve to be recognized as heroes serving their community. Their work is greater than buildings and classrooms — they are building lives, hope, and a future.
Every child deserves a chance. And every future begins with someone who decides not to turn away from the responsibility of humanity.
