Now more than ever, it is imperative to lift the sanctions on #Syria

The sanctions on the Assad regime worked. The regime was kept weak and that helped the rebels win the war, which in turn saved the country. Without the sanctions, Assad would have been able to better fund his slaughter machine and perhaps stay in power longer. BUT...

Now is the time to lift them - at least most of them. The new Syria needs investment and reconstruction and there’s no reason to slow that down with sanctions now that Assad is gone. They were meant to punish the Assad regime and as leverage on the Assad regime to stop its crimes, but there’s no Assad regime to pressure anymore. Mission accomplished.

The Biden administration should grant a general license today that lifts any sanctions preventing international investment and reconstruction assistance going into Syria. The Catholic Bishop of Aleppo told me in an interview this is what Syrians need right now.

The Congress should allow the Caesar sanctions act to expire on December 20, rather than renewing it. There is a 5-year extension of the Caesar act in the National Defense Authorization Act, but it was put there BEFORE ASSAD FELL. Now, the authors of that bill tell me let it expire. Assad’s dungeons are being opened. The torture chambers are closed. The bill did its job.

Bizarrely, the Biden White House was trying to strike a deal with Assad to LIFT sanctions just TWO WEEKS AGO, because they thought Assad was a stable partner. Oops. Now, the very least the Biden administration can do is lift the sanctions that were targeted at the Assad regime so that Syrians know they were never targeted at the Syrian people.

This does not mean lifting the terrorism sanctions on HTS. That’s not what I’m saying. That’s a separate issue. One worth talking about. But that is more complicated. What will HTS become? Nobody knows. We must judge by its actions over time.

For today, let’s just lift the sanctions that were targeted at the Assad regime, you know, because it DOESN’T EXIST ANYMORE.

Syria is free. Let’s all help them keep it that way. Thank you for your attention.

URGENT: The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1m for information leading to the safe return of Austin Tice.

Austin is an American journalist who was kidnapped by the Assad regime in 2012.

He may be alive inside one of the prisons currently being broken into in Damascus.

The fall of Aleppo in 2016 was a grim prelude to Bucha, Mariupol, and Bakhmut in 2022. It was in Syria that Russian pilots learned how to raze Ukrainian cities to the ground. The world’s failure to stand up to Putin and Assad back then became an open invitation for Putin to invade Ukraine.

Today’s rebel success in Aleppo is promising. With Putin’s army being decimated in Ukraine, he likely can’t spare sufficient forces to save Assad. But the lesson remains: 2016 and 2022 could’ve been avoided if from the very beginning democracies had fought tyrants instead of just shaking the air with words.

Since the earthquake, #Assad's regime has received 149 cargo aircraft loaded with aid from 25 foreign governments.

That's 5,000-10,000 tons of aid.

Tell me again how sanctions have an effect on the delivery aid aid to #Syria?
