@Martin_A_Nunez 1) Cultivated species should have larger potential ranges they can inhabit/be grown in than native ranges. 2) Native range maps may not be great predictors for cultivated taxa. I'd argue #2 because cultivation is different process than regular invasions/exotic spread.

@RogueChieftan Here's an article from Carl Zimmer (from 2005) about venom evolution. It says most snakes (including common eastern snakes) produce venom, but it often isn't clinically relevant to humans so its considered non-venomous. https://t.co/2aMfeKt5Vf

@RogueChieftan It's a fair point, but an arid and sunny environment that can be hot most days even in the winter could be easier for species that are venomous to tolerate year round. But they do hibernate in both places so it could just be that their radiation out of Mexico drives it all.

@RogueChieftan I have heard being venomous is energy intensive for animals and since they are ecotherms they favor warmer environments. Also, I think rattlesnakes (which are most common ven. snakes in SW) radiated from central Mexico area so they may have more species close to that area
