MHM is a place for debate not a shrine to the past. Our extraordinary collection aims to support the empowerment of people. Together, we can change the world.
Weβre taking some time away from our X page to explore other social media spaces. While weβre away you can find us on Facebook @mentalhealthmuseum and Instagram @mhmwakefield. We hope to see you there!
Our November #5minutemakes marks #worldkindnessday; what is kindness & what does it mean? How can we be kind to ourselves as well as other people? Create your own kindness poster to celebrate compassion. Our activities are free & available to everyone whenever the Museum is open.
Happy #Halloween from the Crichton Royal past, in these two accounts of the same event, back in 1842: "fun and harmless frolic" for 50 - 60 patients and their attendants, from two points of view:

#MHM50 week 44: Man mirror. We think this mirror was created at #WRA, presumably by a patient. Similar style mirrors of a male figure, head in hands, legs crossed & wearing traditional folk clothing were sometimes used as witching or scrying mirrors. Our man mirror is a mystery!

#MHM50 week 43: dried frog. Traditional remedies often rely on the supernatural and natural world. Folklorist Edward Lovett describes the practice of wearing a dried (or alive!) frog in a bag around the neck to cure headaches, melancholy (depression) and to keep away fits.

#MHM50 week 42: Administration at #StanleyRoyd was important. Doctors thought recording personal histories, treatments & outcomes of patients would help identify causes of different mental health conditions. Machines like typewriters & computators were used to document daily life
